On May 29, 2020, students at Newport’s Thompson Middle School tuned in to a webinar aboard SSV Oliver Hazard Perry. Along with Dan O'Connor, our program director, and our crew Miranda, Eric, and Jackson, students learned about about simple machines and mechanical advantage as the crew used a pulley system to lift and transfer a ship's liferaft from the deck to the dock. This video is a recording of the livestream from the ship and is provided courtesy of Taylor Rock, science teacher at Thompson Middle School. Week 9 onboard Malizia-Seaexplorer was a week of challenges and triumphs for Boris. He celebrated the New Year at sea, faced frustrating light winds, and conquered his fear of heights by scaling the mast for a crucial repair. Then just as the week seemed to settle, a powerful storm swept in, damaging key systems and adding to the challenges. Despite the challenges, Boris stays focused on the race, encouraged by the success of his climb. So we did it!! We crossed the Gulf of Mexico again! This time apon arriving into Pensacola Florida we came across the daunting truth that the virus that was in China when we left Texas is now a full blown pandemic and the entire world is shutting down. We decided it was best to keep moving and keep our distance at sea instead of increasing our chances by sticking close to land. We also thought about renaming our sailboat to Mephobia -- which means being afraid of being so awesome that the world can't handle it AND DIES --- too soon? Wir, Joachim und Sabine, sind die Crew der Atanga. Wir sind am 01. Juni 2014 in Hamburg gestartet. 2015: Kanarischen Inseln 2016: Kapverdische Inseln, im Februar 2016 unsere Atlantik-Überquerung nach Französisch Guyana. Dann kleine Antillen und noch einmal die Guyanas und Suriname mit der Nereid’s Rally. 2017: ABC-Inseln (nur BC), Mexiko und Belize. In Mexiko haben wir eine dreiwöchige Rundreise im Landesinneren unternommen. Im Anschluss kamen Providencia und Kolumbien Festland (ebenfalls mit einer dreiwöchigen Rundreise) und die San Blas Inseln in Panama. 2018: Wir wurden im Januar in Panama vom Blitz getroffen. Die Reparatur dauerte drei Monate. Nach der Passage durch den Panama Kanal haben wir den Rest des Jahres in Ecuador verbracht und fünf Wochen das Landesinnere erkundet. 2019: Osterinsel, Gambier, Tuamotu und Gesellschaftsinseln. 2020: Die Corona-Krise hat uns in Gambier (Franz. Polynesien) erwischt. Wir werden sehen, wohin der Wind uns treibt und wie weit wir kommen.
