We didn’t realise how close we were… until it was almost too late. With limited information on anchorages, broken gear along the way, and more problem-solving than sailing at times, getting there was anything but straightforward. From fixing our watermaker and electric winch, to creating our own anchorage in unfamiliar waters, this journey pushed both us and our boat. And then, an unexpected storm rolled through. With a sudden wind shift, building seas, and very little protection, we found ourselves just metres from the reef — fighting to keep our home safe in conditions even the locals hadn’t expected. Despite the challenges, Five Islands gave us some of our most beautiful days in the Maldives — and one of our scariest nights. It’s a place we’ll never forget. On my last day of the Menai Strait adventure, I sail my Drascombe Lugger to Fort Belan and back. Stopping in the windy bay by the fort to have lunch onboard.
