With our Sailing plans changing, we returned to Thailand to wait for the weather and begin our journey to the northern route of the Indian Ocean to Sri Lanka before heading south across the Indian Ocean once cyclone season has finished and the trade winds begin! We were on our shake down sail when the mooring we were on failed and our home ended up on the reef... We saved the old girl and got her back to the boat yard for repairs to continue on our adventure! Is it worth paying €452,664 before taxes for a Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 455? In this full walkthrough, I show you this cruising sailboat inside and out, but not like a sales tour: we are also going to look at the details that are not usually shown. In this video, we go through the swim platform, the aft area, the lockers, the steering system, the autopilot, the cockpit layout, the winches, the walk-around deck, the bow, the anchoring setup, the cabins, the saloon, the galley, the heads, access to the Yanmar engine, and several construction and finish details worth checking before buying a new or pre-owned boat. The Sun Odyssey 455 is a spacious, bright sailboat designed for recreational sailing, family cruising, and life on board. It has some very interesting solutions, such as the cockpit with two side tables, the clear central passageway, the large storage lockers, the symmetrical aft cabins, a very functional U-shaped galley, and fairly comfortable engine access for maintenance. But there are also points that are worth analyzing carefully: wiring, interior finishes, unsealed marine plywood in some areas, winch layout, a bilge with water in the display boat, the Genoa trimming system, and some deck elements that may spark debate. The idea behind this video is not to say whether the boat is “good” or “bad,” but to show you what I would look at if I were considering buying a sailboat of this type. Many times, during a quick visit, we focus on the design, the space, the natural light, or the aesthetics of the interior. But on a boat, maintenance access, finish quality, wood protection, wiring layout, seacocks, lockers, the steering system, and real ease of use while sailing also matter a great deal. If you like cruising sailboats, new boats, comparisons between shipyards, recreational boating, and honest boat reviews, this video will interest you. During the walkthrough, I will also ask you questions because I want to know your opinion: do you like the cockpit layout? Do you prefer a barber hauler system or a traditional Genoa car? We departed on an overnight passage south from Mazatlán to the spectacular Isla Isabel, arriving just in time for the swell to start rolling in to the questionable anchorage! It took many, many dives to free the chain from boulders, and a near miss with the stern anchor chafing on rocks. We finally got comfortable and are treated to one of the most vibrant sunsets ever, which more than made up for all of the troubles! Having a Starlink mini on your boat transforms your life, well it has ours! Starlink means we can work on our YT channel, be constantly connected if we want to, even in the middle of an ocean ( which is a bit freaky!) Have facetime calls with the family whenever we want, always have comprehensive animated weather models not sketchy GRIB files, watch Netflix etc etc The mini goes a step further than that because it is portable, so we can simply unclip it from the boat and take it with us if we go on a road trip, we simply use one of the many great battery power banks available for the mini now ( links to the ones we showed at the bottom of the page) We didn't go into specifics of the cost in the video because it actually depends on where you register the Starlink, this determines the cost they decide to charge. Our monthly charge is 4,867.64 Columbian pesos ( thats £108.35 or $145.80us ) Thats for Roam Unlimited. We choose roam unlimited because with that contract we can flick the switch to 'Ocean' mode when we are more than 12nm offshore and still have connection. Also as I said in the video if the XTAR had been available when we fitted the mini I would have used it to power the Starlink full time instead of buying the Victron Pheonix inverter. It would have been easier to fit as I could have it closer, it would just need to be close to a usb socket to keep it charged up. This would be a vert effiecient way of setting it up and if the XTAR was just in a cupboard or something then you could still take it with you for road trips.
