This summer we took the Pancake up north for a round trip of Scandinavia. Ultimate goal was to round the north cape with our plane, but there was more than enough to see along the road. First destination Copenhagen, via Roskilde airport, next stop Oslo and the magnificent fjords towards the west coast of Norway. In the last segment of Part 1 we fly north along the Norwegian coast until we cross to the even more beautiful Lofoten.

Holly met her husband at the first Snipe regatta she ever sailed. It was the North American's in 1994. Sixteen years latter, she's got two young children and expects to be sailing Snipes with them for the next 20 years. What's kept Holly so active in the Class? It's the people. She's made friends from coast to coast as she and her husband have sailed in big and small regattas around the country. That makes it no surprise that she encourages collegiate sailors to come out and get hooked.

La barca a vela prenderà la direzione al largo della costa grazie alla giusta regolazione delle vele; assaporare l´odore del mare, fare un meraviglioso bagno in acque limpidissime e se lo vorrete di fare attività di snorkeling, poi esplorare il fondale marino grazie all´attrezzatura messa a disposizione a bordo. potrete portare anche i bambini per far vivere loro un'esperienza meravigliosa a contatto con il mare, e anche con qualche delfino, che nel mare delle egadi trova le condizioni per abitarci. potrete scoprire la bellezza incontaminata delle calette, specchi acquei di mare trasparenti.. la celebre Cala Rossa di Favignana, e il suo azzurro delle acque trasparentissime. Le Egadi offrono angoli di mare elencati fra i più belli del Mediterraneo, dove potrete confondervi con la natura al di fuori del tempo, viendo sensazione di pace e di relax che solo la navigazione a vela regala per assenza di rumori.... solo puro piacere; sentire il vento e l'acqua sullo scafo, dimenticare lo stress delle città della routine di tutti i giorni; dormire in rada, magari al chiarore di luna... oppure sentirsi transtullare dalle onde serali di bonaccia, mentre si dorme o si dormicchia in silenzio (c'è chi lo fa in coperta, magari dentro un sacco a pelo...) in compagnia delle stelle, fattre più luminose, lontano dai bagliori delle città.... Svegliarsi presto di mattina, mentre tutti gli altri dormono, camminare lenti in barca e magari tuffarsi in santa pace... senza nessuno.... ritornare a bordo, fare colazione, leggere, osservare, vivere lentamente.... salpare quasi senza meta, liberi di navigare, quasi senza interesse... diventare tutt'uno con la barca, sentirla propria, vivere con lei le onde, il mare i panorami mozzafiato che immancabilmente ti faranno compagnia, si faranno trovare, non devi cercarli... le Egadi sono bellissime, favignana, levanzo, marettimo, ognuna ha una particolare specificità... ------------------------------------------------------------------------------

E si susseguono pit stop: si parte da Favignana, si tocca Cefalù (Pa), Giardini Naxos (Me), Marzamemi (Sr), Sciacca (Ag) per rientrare a Favignana dopo 430 miglia. è una competizione velica unica nel suo genere, un mix di avventura, sfida, adrenalina. Vince il più forte, il più preparato; la tattica, il coraggio. il Trofeo Challenge "Ignazio Florio" E' una competizione velica, una regata d'altura, ad inviti. Partecipano in genere tutti i circoli velici, dagli Yacht Club italiani e internazionali. La sfida è impegnativa: una tre giorni di prove costiere tra le isole Egadi e prove sulle boe nello specchio d'acqua tra Favignana e Trapani - una giornata viene dedicata alle prove sulle boe, due giornate ai percorsi costieri; nella giornata dedicata alle prove su boe, vengono disputate due gare.

Megan Place started sailing Snipes just over three years ago. She was in High School sailing and loved the challenges that sailing a technical boat like the Snipe offers the crew. She teamed up with Ernesto Rodriguez and the two of them placed third at last year's Snipe World Championship - the highest ranking US team at the Worlds. She believes that even though the other teams may be her competition, helping one team raises the bar for all the competitors.

This clip has been put together for Nancy Lake and her class at Wybunbury Delves Primary School, Wybunbury, near Nantwich in Cheshire, UK. Nancy is reading to her class "Kensuke's Kingdom", a story about a boy who goes sailing with his parents and becomes ship-wrecked on an island. He shares the island with a Japanese war veteran. Nancy's class is is actually aged 10-11, whereas this clip is more suitable for 5-7 year olds. That said I'm actually 40 years old and I enjoy watching it! It gives you an idea of the passage we have recently undertaken by boat from Turkey to India, which is all documented at www.followtheboat.com.
