Many of us live lives dreaming of the day when we can be free to sail the oceans. A burning desire for adventure, and the need for freedom, often drives the free spirits we all have to the surface. A time can come for the lucky ones when the freedom of globetrotting in a yacht is attainable. A lot of research is needed, long before you get to the point of buying a yacht, that's up to the job of looking after you. We hope our video helps that research. It's not all about the keel shape that makes for a trusted Globetrotter, but it's a significant factor in offering safe, long-distance travel. Thousands of yachts sail the globe successfully each year. Some people start the adventure and don't fulfil their dream. Many factors can contribute to you and your yacht not being up to the job of circumnavigating the world. It's fair to say human error accounts for most failures, and so some common threads need to be avoided, such as fatigue. A yacht designed to smooth out the bumps in a journey gives a massive advantage in the battle against tiredness. Fortunately, most who fail to make it around the world give up and go back home safe and well. This video has just a few of the yachts that could easily take you safely on a global adventure time after time over many years. I've selected half a dozen globetrotting yachts from our archive for this video. I still have some for sale, so please call me if you want help buying a globetrotter for an upcoming adventure. Silver heels If ever there was a hull shape that could keep you safe in virtually any weather conditions, this is it! The downside being this yacht isn't going anywhere fast, but each mile that slips under her keel will be effortless and comfortable. Time on any passage will pass quickly as you relax into your adventure. A super long bowsprit is less common on new yachts. It has its advantages, but its demise on many new yachts probably comes from the cost of marina berthing. Few new boat buyers will pay a fresh air premium in marinas despite the many advantages of a nice long bowsprit. Below deck, this yacht is enchanting. She has everything needed for one or two people to be comfortable. They will sleep safe and sound as the miles slip by under her keel. Halberg Rassey Halberg Rassey makes a superb range of yachts. They are perfect for extended cruising or globetrotting. If you want a yacht that stands out in the crowd, this might be the one for you! She is a fast cruiser with an excellent pedigree. This particular yacht offers solid protection from wind and rain if you fancy cruising cooler climates. Down below, the beautiful accommodation and living space will wow visitors wherever you are in the world. Belliure 50 Ketch A family lived aboard for almost a decade until it was time to pass her over to new owners. She was lifted out for inspection then sold to a couple who plan a Globetrotting adventure in her. The once-famous Belliure Yard was in Calpe near Alicante, Spain. Our company was privileged to use the yard to commission new yachts for a few years. The Spanish yard had a highly skilled workforce capable of turning out superb boats and yachts. Sadly the economic crash in late 2000 caused the yard to finally close. Amel Sharki One of the most sought after brands ever built, a superb yacht, some would say, quirky at best, an unusual design by the dedicated globetrotting sailor, Henery Amel. The Sharki in this video was built in 1982, then fully restored more recently. She still looks fantastic despite having cruised extensively for many years. Northwind A very capable deck saloon yacht, having upper and lower helm positions. Shortly after we sold her, this yacht went for a re-fit. Indeed, the new owner lavished her with the latest equipment to prepare for his adventure. Northwind was also a victim of the banking crash in 2008. The Northwind yard was based in the Centre of Barcelona. Yet another example of a luxury boat builder that should have been saved for future generations of yacht owners. Amel Super Maramu When it comes to Globetrotting Yachts, many experienced sailors will agree that a 53ft Amel Super Maramu is about as good as it gets! In recent years the Youtube Channel SV Dellos made the brand more famous, as they sailed worldwide for almost a decade in an Amel Super Maramu. To date, SV Delos has been almost continually adventurising, only taking a break for general maintenance. Die Aufgabe: Jochum möchte ein Segelboot kaufen für den Hohen Norden, für seine Heimat Island. Budget sind 200.000€ und wir haben uns auf die Suche gemacht nach dem passenden Alu Explorer - um die 42 Fuß, einhandtauglich und solide soll er sein. Die momentane Marktlage bedingt, dass man auf so etwas spezielles durchaus mal länger warten muss. Nach 2 Monaten kam dann die Sadko auf den Markt. Eine Pocock 42, ein Einzelstück aus Großbritannien, gebaut für einen Einhandsegler, der schon in so gut wie allem Weltmeeren damit unterwegs war. Und jetzt verkauft es der Paul - ein Zuschauer von uns. Die Aufteilung ist speziell, die Ausstattung super, die Optik außen scheint jedoch mangelhaft zu sein. Jochum ist dennoch überzeugt und wir machen uns auf den Weg nach Kiel zum Gutachten. Heute sogar mal zu dritt. Eine Seltenheit. Wir testen das Schiff auf Herz und Nieren und hatten wie immer äußerst viel Spaß dabei. Eine wirklich coole Aktion war das. Und sogar erfolgreich. Putting boats together in one video might help you decide on your next boat. All will depend on where you do your boating. In cooler climates, the Jeanneau Merry Fisher range has dominated for many years. The Merry Fisher has a closed helm position will keep you safe from bad weather conditions. In warmer climates, a closed wheel station can be a disadvantage. Boat buyers still prefer open cockpit-style boats, which American boat manufacturers first dominated in the early 2000s. A big problem for sport cruisers in the early 2000s though was most boats were powered by thirsty gas (petrol) guzzling v6 and v8 engines. Over the following decade many manufacturers turned diesel options. Diesel engines became even more popular, offering common-rail fuel injection. The difference in fuel economy between petrol and diesel is staggering. Fast forward to the decade following the banking crash of 2008 and the development of outboard engines with the new generation of fuel-efficient petrol-powered outboards saw the market change again. From around 2020 many large cruiser boats are offered for sale with triple outboard options. The predicted decline in small diesel engines used on pleasure craft has opened the door for even more possibilities. We will see a growth in electric boats soon, but that's for a future video. Brigitta war natürlich erst einmal vollkommen überrascht, obwohl eine Weltumsegelung wesentlich besser in Ihr berufliches Leben als Vorruheständlerin passte als in meins. In den letzten 6 Monaten hat Sie aber eine erstaunliche Entwicklung hinter sich gebracht und freut sich auf unser großes Abenteuer genau wie ich. This Cruising Conversations interview is dedicated to Mary Umstot, who passed away on October 12, 2021. Mary and her husband Denis enjoyed over 64 years together and a large part of that time was spent cruising offshore. Denis and Mary are two veteran cruisers who were early adapters of the cruising under power lifestyle. During their many years cruising, they collected courtesy flags from the 40 countries they visited with TEKA III, their Robert Beebe designed long-range cruising trawler. Their experiences traveling the world by sea helped pave the way for all of us who have followed. Not only did they live and breathe the cruising lifestyle, but they were both major contributors to the educational side of cruising. Mary was the author of the book, Cruising in the Mediterranean, and she also wrote a children’s book, How Boats Work (illustrated by Penny Talbot – another long-range cruiser). When it was time for the fourth edition of Robert Beebe’s classic, Voyaging Under Power, the publisher sought out Mary to take on the task. Mary deferred the task to her husband Denis and over a year later in 2008, the latest version was published. In May of 2021, Jeff Merrill caught up with Denis and Mary Umstot in Anacortes, WA. At the time, Denis and Mary were preparing TEKA III for sale after 24 years of ownership, and it closed shortly thereafter. It was an ideal time to talk with Denis and Mary in the saloon of TEKA III and listen to them reminisce and recount some of their exploits aboard. Thank you Denis and Mary, it was a wonderful time we spent together.
