After sailing over 20,000 nm on our monohull ForTuna and 7,000 nm on the catamaran Zambezi, we’re finally ready to share our honest opinion on the never-ending Catamaran vs Monohull debate. For this review, we compared both boats in 4 key aspects: 1️⃣ Sailing performance on long passages A tie. The cat is faster, but needs way more wind to move. Moreover when sailing close-hauled, the main dominates and maneuvering in higher winds often requires the engine’s help. 2️⃣ Sailing comfort This one surprised us. Catamarans are shockingly uncomfortable once the sea starts moving. Each wave hits twice, the hulls slam, the rig creaks, and our bodies couldn’t predict the motion. On a monohull, the movement is linear, predictable and our stomachs are much happier. 3️⃣ Living comfort The cat wins. The space, light, and “upper-level living” are unbeatable. But you’ll also find it hard to hide from the sun. 4️⃣ Maintenance Another tie. Double the hulls, double the engines, double the systems. Whatever you spend or fix on a monohull, double it for a catamaran. That said, redundancy can be a plus offshore. Our verdict: We’re staying on a monohull. The living space of a catamaran is tempting, but the sailing comfort just isn’t for us. We plan to keep crossing oceans and we’d rather live smaller than be seasick. What’s your take on the cat vs mono debate? Stay salty, Greta & Michael 🌊 #sailing #sailboat #boatlife⚓️ #liveaboard #sailboatlife #sailingadventure

After the Brest Atlantiques in 2019, a 17,000-mile race sailed double-handed + a mediaman, Ultim Sailing has proposed to the Ultim class a new crewed race (6 sailors per trimaran) over a distance of 3,500 miles to be raced on the North Atlantic, every 2 years, in even-numbered years. For 2024, the course has been modified to allow the Ultims to sail the Mediterranean basin, and to offer residents of the southern regions of France the chance to discover these fantastic machines. That’s how our publicity manager Maria Chanau set off aboard Sodebo 3 for a few hours, accompanied by her skipper Thomas Coville and the guest star of the day, six-time Olympic swimming medalist Florent Manaudou. There was little wind for this outing off Antibes, but Maria was still able to steer the mellowed-out rocketship: “This trimaran is really huge! It's amazing how easy the crew find it to maneuver: in 40 seconds, the mainsail is hoisted to the masthead! On the other hand, I don't know how 8 of them manage to live in there for 50 days. The living space is tiny, noise is omnipresent, and the galley is limited to a single gas burner...” Full report coming soon in Multihulls World! ► Become a FREE SUBSCRIBER to Multihulls World's YouTube page now - https://www.youtube.com/c/MultihullsWorld ► Log on to our website to discover over 500 multihulls tests! 🇬🇧 The weather is beautiful, and temperatures are rising as he approaches Madeira. The routing allows him to maintain good wind pressure. He is taking advantage of this relatively calm moment to tackle the day’s tasks: fixing a few small leaks, addressing an issue with the hydrogenerator, and giving the boat a thorough cleaning. ------------------------ ➡️ SUIVEZ-NOUS ! // FOLLOW US ! 🔗 Website : www.vendeeglobe.org 📸 Instagram : https://www.instagram.com/vendeeglobe/ 🐦 Twitter FR : https://twitter.com/VendeeGlobe | Twitter ENG : https://twitter.com/VendeeGlobeENG 🕺 TikTok : https://www.tiktok.com/@vendee_globe 💻 Facebook : https://www.facebook.com/VendeeGlobe 💼 LinkedIn : https://www.linkedin.com/company/vendée-globe/
