We Tested the Oceans DNA. Here’s What We Found.

What is actually hiding in Europe’s seas? 🔬 To mark World Ocean's Day, we are diving into some preliminary results from The Ocean Race Europe 2025. While racing across 2,000+ nautical miles from Spain to Montenegro, Team Paprec Arkéa collected environmental DNA (eDNA) samples - capturing the microscopic genetic fingerprints left behind by marine life. By analysing just 24 offshore samples, scientists from Citizens of the Sea uncovered over 8.5 million DNA sequences, detecting 2,365 types of bacteria and 785 plant and animal groups.
