Trailer Sailing St.Helens Geelong to Mud Islands
Sailing our RL 28 Neringa from St.Helens to Mud Islands on Port Phillip Bay. Good sailing winds on the first day with 20 to 25 knots from astern I had a great run to the now complete Portarlington harbour for the night. The wind drops for the next 2 days making for ideal conditions to explore Mud Islands. The deepest water is on the SE corner of the islands and close to shore at this point are a couple of moorings. Anything in the top half of the tide will give a depth of 0.5 to 1 m depth on approach. Beaching is possible here but only in light conditions. As an anchorage it only offers protection from the WSW around to the NW otherwise only suitable in winds below 15 knots. September to November sees the island home to thousands of nesting birds, and absolute spectacle to see and well worth the visit. The islands also know as the Great Sand Islands has long sandy beaches to explore and it takes less than 2 hours to walk around the islands. Sunsets and sea views of passing shipping and the Rip are superb.
