While they were once thought to only occur once every 10,000 years. We now know they happen far more frequently with potentially devastating results. On April 12th, 1966, the Italian liner SS Michelangelo was hit by an unexpected rogue wave at the tail end of a massive storm. The impact did major damage to the ship and killed three. Lessons learned from the disaster led to changes in ship design to better protect against the deadly rogue wave phenomenon.
