Sailing Through Snow Squalls in Lofoten | Arctic Spring Aboard Polaris | Ep. 91
In this episode, we continue our Arctic sailing adventure aboard Polaris, cruising through Lofoten in Northern Norway. After leaving Trollfjorden, we sail towards Skrova, navigating shifting spring winds, narrow skerry passages, fishing marks, reefing decisions, and gusts well above the forecast while searching for a safe harbour among fjords, islands, and remote Arctic coastline. This passage shows the real rhythm of high-latitude cruising: careful route planning, changing weather, cold-water sailing, quiet harbours, and life aboard our liveaboard yacht in the far north. Along the way we experience our first proper sailing day of the season, white-tailed sea eagles above Skrova, and a sudden snow squall on passage towards Nusfjord. Sailing details in this episode: Route: Trollfjorden to Skrova, then onwards towards Henningsvær and Nusfjord Area: Lofoten, Northern Norway Distance: Approx. 20 NM from Trollfjorden to Skrova, 10.5 NM from Skrova to Henningsvær, and 22 NM towards Nusfjord Conditions: Light winds building to 17–18 knots, gusts above 20 knots and up to around 30 knots, cold spring weather, snow squalls, and poor visibility Harbours, Anchorages: Skrova, Henningsvær, Nusfjord Main challenge: Early season reefing issues, handling gusty mountain winds, avoiding skerries in poor visibility, and adapting the route during changing Arctic spring weather 📘 Norwegian Cruising Guide We also co-write and publish the Norwegian Cruising Guide — a harbour and anchorage guide for sailors exploring the Norwegian coast – first published in 1978.
