I Found The Bitches by Accident | Ramsey Sound
An early-morning walk above Ramsey Sound led me to The Bitches, a rocky reef where fast tides create powerful currents, whirlpools and standing waves. Filmed at sunrise on the Pembrokeshire Coast Path, with Ramsey Island just across the water, this short film shows the reef from the cliffs and from the air. After spending the night at Rhosson Ganol, I set off without really knowing what I would find around the next corner. The views towards Ramsey Island were beautiful, but it was the unusual rocks and the movement of the water below that caught my attention. The Bitches and Whelps stretch into Ramsey Sound between Ramsey Island and the Pembrokeshire mainland. As the tide moves through the narrow channel, the water around the reef can form strong currents, eddies, whirlpools and standing waves. It is a serious stretch of water and a well-known location for experienced white-water kayakers. I had no idea any of this was here when I set out that morning. Sometimes the places you find by accident are the ones you remember most. 00:00 A sunrise walk from Rhosson Ganol 00:24 First view towards Ramsey Island 00:37 Discovering The Bitches 00:49 Looking across Ramsey Sound 01:09 Why the water becomes turbulent 01:28 An unexpected morning find Have you heard of The Bitches before, or seen the tidal race from the coast or from a boat?
