How to plastic weld repair a Polyethylene (PE) Boat water tank - Sailing Ula

Today we attempt to repair our aft water tank that recently leaked 60lt into the bilges through a small split in the Polyethylene. This is the second failure (the first one was in 2018) when the tank was replaced with a new one. Amazingly the failure in this tank is in exactly the same position as last time, making us believe this is a design fault. Before we go ahead and order a new one, we will attempt to carry out a weld repair, which is notoriously difficult to do without the correct tools and welding sticks. Can we do it with just a common soldering gun, and a piece of off cut from the tanks filler neck? Please leave your thoughts in the comments below.
