🇨🇳 🌊 Sailing Home After 3 Years After three years of sailing across half the world and visiting over 20 countries, I'm finally sailing home to Shenzhen, China. But getting home wasn't as simple as crossing the water. We sailed 96 nautical miles from Hong Kong, through Guishan Island in Zhuhai, before finally reaching Shenzhen at 1 AM. This time aboard JELIK 5, a 76-foot racing sailboat — no autopilot, no shade, just teamwork, wind, and one unforgettable journey home.

⛵ Chapters 00:00 地中海的风|Mediterranean Winds 01:XX 古代方帆 vs 现代帆船|Ancient vs Modern Sailing 02:XX 古代水手如何导航|Navigation Before GPS Modern sailing gives us better boats, weather forecasts and GPS — but the wind still decides where we can go. In this episode, I look at *The Odyssey* through the eyes of a sailor: ancient ships, Mediterranean winds, sailing upwind, and navigation before modern technology.

I spent two years sailing across the Mediterranean, covering more than 7,150 kilometers. In 2024, I sailed through the Strait of Messina from Italy and into the Aeolian Islands. In The Odyssey, Aeolus, the god of the winds, sealed the raging winds inside a bag. But while Odysseus was asleep, his crew opened it by mistake, unleashing the winds and blowing them all the way back to where they had started. My biggest regret from that trip was missing the chance to climb Stromboli at night , all because of a job interview that, at the time, seemed incredibly important. I’ve been thinking about going back ever since.

— Over the past few years, I sailed 7,150 km through the Mediterranean. Only after revisiting Homer’s Odyssey and comparing its legendary route with my own did I realize that I had sailed past many places associated with the epic. The exact locations of the Sirens, the Cyclops and Calypso are still debated. But approaching these islands, cliffs and straits from the sea helped me understand why ancient sailors imagined monsters, gods and giants here. This is Episode 1 of Sailing Into The Odyssey—a series exploring the real Mediterranean landscapes behind the myth.
