Chasing a Cyclone to the Lau Islands | Sailing 300 Miles to Fiji's Most Remote Islands

Welcome back to another episode of WE|Sail. EPISODE 344 Cyclone Vaianu has passed. The lines are off the dock. And after weeks of waiting — we are finally underway. We're leaving Vuda Marina in Nadi and pointing VA east. 300 miles to the Lau Islands, Fiji's most remote island group. We've been trying to get here for weeks. A cyclone had other ideas. But today the wind is blowing the right direction for the first time in a long time — the tail end of the same storm that kept us pinned down — and we are not wasting it. Getting out past the barrier reef is the first test. The seas are sloppy, leftover swell from the cyclone mixing with fresh wind chop — it's not comfortable, but we've got sails up and we're moving. And within the first few miles of open ocean, the fishing rod goes off. Fresh tuna. Day one. We'll take it. This episode is the departure — the relief, the rough first hours, and the start of what we hope is one of the most remote and rewarding sails of our seven years out here.
