As there was a prediction for strong winds coming we decided to leave Portland Harbour and go to a more protected anchorage. The wind was very light and was against us so we decided to motorsail. The first day we went from Portland Harbour to Studland. It took us almost 5 hours to do 26 nm. Several massive cruise ships have been arriving in Weymouth Bay and Portland Harbour which continue to be used as holding bays for the vessels during the coronavirus situation. It’s quite funny seeing all of them anchored together. Apart from really strange currents going through Lulworth Banks we had a great sail over to Studland. The second day we left Studland Bay and arrived to Newtown Creek, our final destination. It was very calm until we got to The Needles Channel were we encountered a really strong current that pushed us all the way in. At the narrowest point of the entrance, between Hurst Point and Fort Albert, tidal streams attain a mid-channel flow of up to 3.9 knots on the flood and 4.4 knots on the ebb. Fortunatly, The Solent flood lasts for about nine hours and the ebb between three and a half to four hours. So short, sharp ebbs and longer periods of favourable tides on approaches can be expected. Once we made it to Newtown Creek we got ready for the storm. We filled up the water tanks and got on a mooring buoy. We were going to watch a lot of films on the next few days...
