I sailed Nauti Dogs from Long Island Sound down the East River, under some of the most iconic bridges in the world, and right past the Manhattan skyline. From there, I rounded the southern tip of the island, cruised up the Hudson River, and docked right in the heart of New York City at Chelsea Piers. It’s pretty surreal to tie up your sailboat in one of the busiest cities on earth — surrounded by skyscrapers, ferries, and traffic — yet still fall asleep to the sound of water lapping against the hull. I spent a week living aboard in Manhattan, exploring the city by day and returning “home” to my boat each night. We keep multiple boat hooks onboard “Moments in Time”. We have an extending hook in the forward locker, a special line threading hook forward as well, mostly for catching mooring balls. However, the boat hook located in the stern barely reaches the waterline. This is the hook that will most likely be used in emergencies as it is the most accessible from the cockpit. I decided to replace 6-foot hook with a 14-foot floating telescoping boat hook, This will extend the reach quite a bit and increases the safety factor if something needs to be retrieved from the water. Welcome back aboard Moor R & R! Episode 13. This week we’re off exploring Shaw Island and Thomas Island, and what an adventure it turned out to be! We took the tender out to Maya Cave, an incredible natural formation — definitely one of those wow moments. The best time to visit is around mid to high tide, when you can glide right in and really take in its beauty. Next, we explored the creek system near Saba Bay and walked across to the other side of Shaw Island — such a peaceful and scenic spot. As the winds picked up, we moved around to Burning Point for a bit of shelter before heading over to Thomas Island. Thomas absolutely blew us away — from hiking the rock on Little Tom Island to walking across the main island and looking out over those crystal-clear blue waters, every moment was breathtaking. And to top it all off, we stopped at the beautiful Naked Lady Beach on our way home — the perfect ending to another amazing week in the Whitsundays. 🌴💙 Come along for the highs and lows of life at sea – the joy of community, the challenge of sailing, and all the fun we get up too !!! BoatUS Magazine's associate editor Mark Corke shows you how to tie a cleat hitch knot. This simple hitch is easy to learn and is a boating knot you should know, particularly for tying up your boat at a dock. While there are several different ways to perform this hitch, for example, wrapping the line all the way around the cleat base before starting the figure eight, the result is similar. We'll show you how to do it a few times, both at normal speed and slowed down. To start, take the working end of the line and run it around the side of the cleat farthest from where it comes in. Wrap it around the base until it's back on the same side as your boat, then cross it over the top of the horn, loop it under, come around the base, then back over the horn to finish the figure eight. Make a small loop, turn it under, stick the loop through the horn, and pull tight to set it. We continue refitting a Cape Dory 30 cutter, adding modifications for living aboard and offshore voyaging. Here we begin interior modifications including removing the fiberglass hull liner to rebuild the v-berth and chain locker with watertight collision bulkheads, redesign the clothes locker, head and galley, and address hull/deck joint leaks.
