This is potentially at the max size limit that most capable boating couples would consider running without crew. Thanks to the technology, design and construction of this Riv 64 SMY she's more than capable of some very serious cruising and may be the perfect choice for a family that's looking for a boat to serve you in life after work. THANKS TO OUR SPONSORS Mention code DBL for discounts on Marine Mold Construction – https://ms-marine.eu/ Riviera has reached a point of maturity where they have so many members of their team who have personally been involved in multiple decades of design, building and iteration of these boats. I feel they have reached a point where these larger boats now feel like smaller boats when you are at the helm. I don't mean they are small! That's not my point - what I mean is that the refinements, the small details and the clever additions that just keep coming with Riviera both make total sense and also reduce the work load on the skipper and crew to a point where you can just run these boats quite easily and you find yourself basically having more fun. I hope these words makes sense to those of you who are in the market. Also bear in mind that Riv have already introduced a Series II of this very model so use this as your opportunity to spot the differences on the new model and see what you place value in. If you’re going to bring your child on the boat, the goal is simple: safe and very, very comfortable. In this video we walk through kid gear by age—starting with a Mustang infant life jacket designed to be comfortable, with room so it doesn’t push on the neck, and built so if a child falls in, the collar supports the neck and keeps them upright. As kids get older and start moving around the boat, we show a child PFD with a crotch strap so it stays on if they go overboard, plus reflective so you can spot them with a light at night. For older kids who are on the boat all the time—especially in youth racing programs—we cover comfortable youth PFDs meant to be worn continuously, and why learning early to wear a PFD in dinghies is a good habit. Then we shift to comfort: keeping kids warm and dry so they stay focused and happy on the boat, with kid foul weather pieces, bibs, waterproof smocks, and warmer options for kids who get cold—because warm, dry kids are how you start the life of a lifelong sailor. Reading the Telltales on Your Sails: https://www.practical-sailor.com/sails-rigging-deckgear/reading-the-telltales-on-your-sails You’re trimming your mainsail WRONG. Today we break down the most common mainsail trim mistakes sailors make — and then I’ll show you the exact step-by-step sail trim procedure that will make your boat faster, safer, and way more comfortable. Whether you’re racing, cruising, learning to sail, or living aboard, proper mainsail trim is one of the most important skills you can develop. This video covers mainsail twist, outhaul tension, traveler positioning, backstay and mast bend, luff tension, draft control, leech tension, and how to use the vang correctly. We also talk about heel angle, weather helm, and why your sailboat feels out of balance when the trim is wrong. If your boat heels too much… If your helm feels heavy… If you can’t point high… If your speed is disappointing… This video will FIX all of it. ⚓ MAINSAIL TRIM REFERENCE PACK (All Sources Mentioned) These are the guides, PDFs, and videos I recommend if you want to go deeper: • Quantum Sails – Mainsail Trim Guide (PDF) https://www.quantumsails.com/getattachment/Resources-and-Expertise/Articles/Downloadable-Sail-Trim-Guides/QuantumSails_TrimGuide_Mainsail.pdf.aspx • Speed & Smarts – “Mainsail Trim” https://www.speedandsmarts.com/toolbox/articles2/the-fast-course/mainsail-trim • Sail Magazine – “Mainsail Trim 101” https://www.sailmagazine.com/diy/mainsail-trim-101/ • NauticEd – “How to Trim the Mainsail — Traveler or Mainsheet?” https://sailing-blog.nauticed.org/how-to-trim-the-mainsail-traveler-or-mainsheet/ • Yachting News – “Mainsail Trimming: 4 Steps to Keep It in Shape” https://www.yachtingnews.com/mainsail-trimming/ • All At Sea Caribbean – “Guide to Sail Control: Mainsail Trim” https://www.allatsea.net/guide-to-sail-control-part-ii-mainsail-trim/ • North Sails / RSYS – Mainsail Trim Webinar https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q-W9fA7Vgro • Sail Trim Masterclass https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lWRI8MJ67WY • “3 Ways To Sail Faster — Mainsail Trim Techniques” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ClMisGS9WJg Practical Sailor is your trusted resource for reviews of sailboats and sailing gear. https://www.practical-sailor.com Chat with us on Facebook! https://www.facebook.com/PracticalSailor/

This week aboard Chasing Serenity we hit a huge milestone—1,000 miles traveled on our 50-foot Royal Cape catamaran as we sail from Charleston, SC to St. Augustine, FL. Along the way we’re joined by dolphins day and night. We also get our damaged sail prepped to bring to the sail loft for repair, and I fix the alignment on one of our batten cars and a batten that’s been giving us trouble. For homeschool science, the kids help catch a few jellyfish to study onboard. And in the middle of all the sailing, we celebrate Laurie and Kaylee’s birthdays! 📍 This episode includes: • Sailing from Charleston to St. Augustine • 1,000-mile milestone on our liveaboard catamaran • Dolphins during the day, night… and at sunset • Prepping our torn sail for repair • Batten car and batten alignment fix (Royal Cape 500) • Jellyfish science lesson for the kids • Birthday celebrations onboard • Everyday family life while cruising the East Coast ⛵ We’re a full-time sailing family living aboard our 50-ft Royal Cape catamaran, documenting our journey as new cruisers, handling repairs, learning the ropes, and exploring the world one anchorage at a time.
