Big changes and progress in our forward heads compartment. Just 79 days left of our 100 day to launch challenge. We are now living aboard our Rival 38 Centre Cockpit full-time while finishing a refit so we can launch ASAP. We have a frequently updated blog at https://sustainablesailing.net with membership options and a weekly newsletter at £2 per month for Early Bird Supporters. Our free Sustainable Sailing book is at: https://sustainablesailing.codeberg.page/ Or visit our shop at https://sustainablesailing.teemill.com/ for great hoodies, t-shirts and bags. When we bought Vida in August 2019 she was in a very tired and damp condition with all original equipment and fittings (much of it not working). We have removed all the gas, diesel and paraffin equipment, and are installing all-electric (motor, cooking etc). How often do we truly slow down… and hand our lives over to the ocean? This is the first leg of an Atlantic crossing aboard a Balance 526 — from Cape Town to St Helena. But this isn’t just a passage… it’s something far more meaningful. It’s the beginning of ownership. It’s the ultimate offshore shakedown. And for many Balance owners — it’s a rite of passage. With 1,700 nautical miles behind you… and 1,700 ahead… life simplifies. Your world becomes wind, waves, watches, and the quiet space in between. 🌴 In this episode, we sail to the remote island of Motorina, where we’re welcomed by one of the most musical and generous communities we've encountered on our journey so far. 🌺 ✨ From hand-carved ukuleles to sharing whole-cooked chickens and fresh produce, this village experience is a glimpse into a way of life that has been largely lost in the modern world. 🚣🏽♂️ We trade with locals arriving by canoe, witness the incredible craftsmanship of their traditional sailing canoes, and learn about "bagi" – the island’s ancient form of traditional money, once made from banana seeds, now beautifully recreated using black coral. 🎣 I also head out into the open sea with our friend Jimmy in his dugout canoe, where he teaches me the art of traditional fishing using feathers, hooks, and a rock wrapped in a leaf — a technique passed down for generations. This is real village life, raw and unfiltered. It’s about connection, tradition, and a sustainable way of living that’s increasingly rare in the Western world. If you love off-grid adventures, remote cultures, and traditional skills, this one’s for you. 👇 Watch now and don’t forget to like, comment, and subscribe for more adventures from the sea! 📍 Episode 19 – Sailing Louisiades, Papua New Guinea 🛶 Location: Motorina Island, Louisiade Archipelago 📽️ Highlights: Traditional Village life, Local Music, Trading, Boat Building & Making Bagi ⏱️ Timestamps: 00:00 – 🚤 Sailing from Panasia Island to Motorina Island 01:09 – 👋 Channel Intro – Meet the Crew! 01:38 – 🏝️ A Warm Welcome into the Village 03:06 – 🌿 Life in a Traditional Village 04:12 – 🥁 Local Kids Playing Traditional Music 06:10 – 🍉 Fruits & Veggies We Received from Trading 07:19 – 🤝 What Trading for Our Food Looks Like 08:56 – 🛠️ Boat Building & More Local Trade 12:47 – 📿 How Locals Make Traditional Bagi Necklaces 16:19 – 🎣 Fishing the Traditional Way 18:12 – 💭 Final Thoughts on Motorina Village 🫶 Support Our Journey: 💡 PATREON ☞ https://www.patreon.com/c/onceuponareef ☕ Buy us a coffee ☞ https://buymeacoffee.com/onceuponareef 🎁 Send us a gift ☞ https://throne.com/onceuponareef 🌍 Follow Our Adventures: 📸 INSTAGRAM: @onceuponareef & @wheres.poppy 🎥 Poppy's YouTube Channel ☞ https://www.youtube.com/wherespoppy 📧 BUSINESS INQUIRIES - onceuponareef@protonmail.com Hey there, we’re Ryan and Poppy, a couple of adventure junkie sailors out to explore the most amazing reefs and islands in the world. In this episode, our family splits up for two very different adventures in Panama. Shane and our oldest son, Cole, join a friend’s sailboat to help with a full Panama Canal transit, while I stay back in Linton Bay with Hudson and Addison. Their journey takes them through the first three locks and into Gatun Lake for the night, but the real challenge comes the next day when the line-toss crew doesn’t show up as they approach one of the Pacific locks. A missed throw nearly turns into a big problem. Meanwhile, the kids and I set out on our own whimsical adventure. Spotting monkeys on a morning walk, swimming in a mangrove where crocodiles might be lurking, hopping buses into Panama City, wandering the colourful streets of Casco Viejo, and eating our way through the day. After their long canal crossing and our playful dash through the city, we finally reunite at the anchorage outside Panama City. Two different paths, one unforgettable adventure.

We escape our wet, mouldy boat and trek barefoot for hours through rough terrain to help plant yams in a local garden—unlike anything seen in modern society. In the Louisiade Islands of Papua New Guinea, gardening is a mix of tradition and sustainability. Using slash-and-burn methods, hand tools, and rain-fed irrigation, locals grow yams, sweet potatoes, taro, and more. These gardens, often far from villages, are vital for survival and hold deep cultural significance. Join us as we experience firsthand the hard work, knowledge, and traditions that sustain life in this remote paradise. 00:00 - Intro to the Day ⏰ 1:04 - Trying Local Foods (Sago a New Way) 🍽️ 3:10 - Intro Video 🎬 3:39 - How Locals Wash Dishes 🧼 4:10 - Hiking Through the Bush to the Garden 🥾🌿 6:21 - Plants Their Ancestors Would Eat 🌱🍽️ 7:35 - Arrival at the Garden 🚶♂️🌺 9:36 - Poppy Plants Yams with the Ladies 🌿👩🌾 12:29 - Interview with Caroline About Village Life 🎤🏡 14:03 - We Made History (Again) on Sudest Island 🏆🌴 14:38 - Feasting with the Locals 🍲🤝 15:06 - Poppy Jams with the Locals 🎶🍽️ 🎥 Episode 12 – Sailing the Louisiades, Papua New Guinea 📍Location: Sudest Island, Louisiade Archipelago, Papua New Guinea ☕ Support Our Journey ☞ https://buymeacoffee.com/onceuponareef Or 🎁 Send us a gift ☞ https://throne.com/onceuponareef 🌍 Follow us: 📸 INSTAGRAM: @onceuponareef & @wheres.poppy 💡 PATREON ☞ https://www.patreon.com/c/onceuponareef 🎥 Poppy's YouTube Channel ☞ https://www.youtube.com/wherespoppy 📧 BUSINESS INQUIRIES - onceuponareef@protonmail.com Hey there, we’re Ryan and Poppy, a couple of adventure junkie sailors out to explore the most amazing reefs and islands in the world. Kurze Distanzen, Sonnenschein. ▬ keywords ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ #panama #sanblas #kuna #guna #kunayala #gunayala #Indianer #Zentralamerika #congreso #CentralAmerica #atlantik #atlantiksegeln #atlantiküberquerung #barefootroute #Barfussroute #blauwasser #blog #bluehorizon #boatlife #boat #boot #bootfahren #bootsprofis #cruising #expedition #fahrtensegeln #freunde #Glück #Hurrikan #huricane #hurricaneseason #hurrikan #karibik #katamaran #lavagabonde #lagoon40 #langfahrt #langfahrtsegeln #marianoa #ozeansegeln #plan #planinternational #roundtheworld #reiseblog #reisen #segeln #sailing #sailinginsieme #schiff #schnorcheln #segelabenteuer #segelboot #segeljungs #segeln #segelnüberdenatlantik #segelyacht #segler #sommer, #sonnenuntergang #strand #summer #sunset #svdelos #tobago #traum #travel #umdieweltsegeln #unterwegs #vlog #vlogger #weltreise #weltumsegelung ▬ Über diesen Film ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Starterbatterie Ein Stückweit haben wir die Sorgen des Blitzeinschlages in Guatemala vor einem halben Jahr mit hierher genommen. Tom Cunliffe joins us for a proper cup of tea and a wide-ranging conversation about boats, books, and why real seamanship still matters. A merchant seaman turned delivery skipper, Yachtmaster Examiner, columnist and broadcaster, Tom has spent a lifetime at sea—from engine-less beginnings on the Norfolk Broads to long ocean passages on traditional gaff craft and a Colin Archer to South America, the Caribbean and back. He shares the formative moments that shaped his philosophy: sailing without an engine, learning to think like a sailor (not a motor-boater with sails), and why how you recover from a mistake tells you more than whether you make one. We talk navigation then and now. Tom argues that modern electronics are brilliant—but can diminish us if we forget the craft. He explains why raster charts and analogue plotting still earn a place on an iPad, and how his AngelNav approach lets you keep navigating if GPS goes dark. Starlink, he says, has changed cruising beyond recognition—useful, yes, but it dilutes the old solitude that bred self-reliance. Tom also lifts the lid on the writing life: columns on both sides of the Atlantic, the decision to leave certain magazines over copyright, and the long road from textbooks and history to fiction. That leads to his new novel, Hurricane Force—a 1970s Caribbean sailing thriller with rave reviews (Alexander McCall Smith calls him “the Dick Francis of yachting thrillers”). We explore why he set it pre-GPS, how real people and places inspire composite characters, and why plotting a thriller sometimes needs an old roll of wallpaper more than a fancy app. Stories abound: a teenage initiation on a 25-foot gaff sloop with no engine; beating for days into current off Venezuela; sharing an anchorage (and a mishap) with Don Street; ship-handling lessons from the merchant service that still apply to tying up a 45-footer with two people and no drama. Throughout, Tom keeps circling one idea: seamanship is joyful competence—clear thinking, tidy lines, and the confidence to make landfall by the stars if you must. If you love traditional craft, bluewater problem-solving, or just a well-told sea story, this one’s for you. We cover: • Learning under canvas: why starting engine-free rewires your seamanship • The philosophy behind analogue-first navigation on digital tools • The romance and reality of long passages then vs. now • How Hurricane Force was born, shelved, and reborn—plus hints at the sequel • Practical ship-handling tips yacht owners forget (and examiners notice) Pour a brew, settle in, and let one of yachting’s great raconteurs remind you why we go to sea in the first place, and why the best safety gear lives between your ears.
