From Turkey, we sailed for 8 hours to the first Greek island we came across: Limnos. We didn’t know the island, but the capital Myrina turned out to have a beautiful marina. The harbor lay beneath a high cliff topped by an impressive Venetian castle. We sent our drone up into the air to take a closer look at this stunning surroundings

Ambre Hasson talked with Oliver Heer, the Swiss skipper of Tut gut, about his life before becoming a professional sailor, why he decided he needed to get out of the office and on to the water, how he met Alex Thompson, which was his route into IMOCA sailing. He reinforced just how important the preparation is for the Vendée Globe and how making the right decisions ahead of the race, regardless of your budget, is utterly key. There have been setbacks along the path to the race, including losing his mast, and an electronics failure onboard, which led to have to sail ‘old school’, with manual steering and paper charts, but Oliver has used these as learning experiences as much as possible. Finding the right boat is a key point in any Vendée campaign, and Oliver explains how he came by his IMOCA yacht, and what changes have been made since he made the purchase in 2021, including raising the coach roof since he is almost two metres tall! Finally, Oliver explains the importance of being able to relax during the race, even if it’s just for 30 minutes, and the challenge of cooking and getting enough calories. Understandably, both are extremely difficult on a boat which is bouncing in waves at up to 30 knots, and he describes superbly just what can happen when you are sleep deprived. He concludes by saying, “If anybody dreams of doing the Vendée Globe then absolutely go for it.”

Happy new year all. Never one to copy and be a sheep, but I have copied and I am a sheep. New Years day saw me dig out the running shoes and go trueing around the streets, all with one thing in mind. Get boat fit!! Now boat fit I have always said is different to being fit for a boat, or indeed being fit. What am I on about??!! I thin I am saying you can be boat fit, which is being at one with the boat and being able to get around with ease because you become used to your surrounds and being at sea, even if you are technically unfit. Then there is what I am trying to do which is get fitter to allow me to carry off better manoeuvres and not to be so exhausted after each. I am not fitness guru. DO NOT listen to anything I say with regards fitness. In short this video is the start of my attempt to loose weight, and get fitter for the double handed sailing escapades that are to come this year and after. Will I manage to shed an ounce of weight? Will I be able to run any further than the end of the road? Who the hell knows. What this video is not, is a fitness video. It is not the start of something differenent. Boats will return in their normal format in the next video. I have forgotten how much I like to talk absolute twiddle in these bits. It is much fun. I think I would like to go off at a random canter pace now, about British politics, social unfairness and pigmentation of Cornish seaweed. I won't though. Charlie Dalin on MACIF Santé Prévoyance has won the Vendée Globe 2024-25, and in the process has destroyed the previous record, finishing at 07:24:49 UTC on Tuesday 14th January in a time of 64 days, 19 hours, 22 minutes, 49 seconds. The previous record, set by Armel Le Cléac'h on Banque Populaire VIII in the 2016-17 edition of the race was 74 days, 3 hours and 36 minutes, meaning that Dalin has taken a staggering 9 days, 8 hours, 12 minutes and 57 seconds off the previous reference. The scenes in Les Sables d'Olonne were spectacular, with a full moon before dawn illuminating the IMOCA yacht and a huge spectator fleet following him into the line. With clear skies, the golden hue of the sun made for an incredible backdrop in what is a fitting and deserved win for Dalin, who has lived up to his tag of pre-race favourite in emphatic style, sailing 27,667.91 nautical miles at an average speed of 17.79 knots.
