40,000Nm, a circumnavigation of the world, completed double-handed, in a decked in, dug-out, red cedar canoe. The bare facts on the page already seem impossible. There is only one sailor who holds a candle to Capt. Slocum, and that is Capt. Voss. If you don't know who that is, don't worry, I didn't know either until I read this book. Now, I can't stop stop wondering how on earth he did what he did, and realizing once again, that modern sailing truly stands on the shoulders of giants. I invite you to learn with me, the incredible story of one of the almost forgotten fathers of offshore sailing. When I think of Adlard Coles, I think of the famous Nautical Publishing House, but the fact is that the person behind that same institution was first off a small craft sailor just like you and I. This, his first book, is the tale of his first ever, long-distance cruise. What a career lay ahead of him! Despite not really knowing exactly what they were doing, Coles and his crew ventured across the storm-tossed North Sea and into the sand bar nightmare of the Zuider Zee & Frisian Islands. Unperturbed, they then crossed into the Baltic Sea, finally fetching themselves up in Copenhagen. Whist the voyage alone, in a 20ft yacht is noteworthy enough, Coles' narrative gives a unique glimpse also into the bubbling cauldron of unrest, that was sweeping Europe at this time, exactly 101 years ago. I found this little anthology of sailing stories over the weekend and decided to give it a shot. I want you to consider that each story is written by a sailor just like you, who experienced something so unique in their sailing career, that they felt compelled to put it on paper and share it. What would it take for you to do the same? Probably quite a lot! These stories, like all the rest in the Mariner's Library are a fantastic window through time to a group of people you would no doubt love to have aboard one evening to share a drink with; That's not possible now, but through these stories their experiences remain to teach and entertain, and we can still have a laugh (or a shudder!) with these fellow rovers 100 years later. How awesome it that? If you appreciate this content, please consider supporting the podcast with a donation of $5 per month. In return you will get access to more exclusive patron-only book readings at: www.patreon.com/themariner (http://www.patreon.com/themariner)
When I was growing up, my parents read me 'Swallows & Amazons' by Arthur Ransome. That first book, and the series of adventure stories for children Ransome followed it up with, still to this day remain for me some of the most magical and endearing tales of my youth. You can imagine then, my excitement at discovering a Ransome story here in the Mariner's Library that allows me as an adult and a sailor to connect with Ransome once again and discover that he also was a sailor. His stories perhaps underpin my love of the ocean, developed at a young age- it's wonderful at 45 years old to discover that he really did know his tack from his gybe, and had already done his hours at the tiller, 60 years before I heard his stories. I have really enjoyed reading this story and I hope in turn you get pleasure from listening. If you find that you like this authors style I would point you towards 'Swallows & Amazons' and the Arthur Ransome society in the UK https://arthur-ransome.org/ If you would like to support this podcast, which is published for free, five days a week (Tues-Sat) please follow the link over to Patreon, where you can join our community and for $5 a month gain access to loads more exclusive audio books recordings just like this one.

This book is the chronicle of W.A. Robinson setting off on his 32 footer 'Svaap' from Panama, then taking two years to circumnavigate the world, during the interwar years. It is a wonderfully written and diligent account, by a sailor who, although initially advertising himself as 'not a writer', goes on to produce the most wonderfully vivid and heartfelt story, that even now, a hundred years later, still stirs the soul to adventures beyond the West horizon. After reading so many sailing books from the past 120 years I am starting to recognize certain authors who I had never heard of before starting the Mariner's Library who were giants within the sailing community a life time ago. One of the most commonly referenced authors from the first half of the 20th century has to be Weston Martyr, and the book everyone compliments is 'The Southseaman'. Just learning whatever I can about the man, his adventures and the nature of his bond with the sea plus a quick reading of the opening few pages told me enough for me to know that we would be in for a great tale, told by a master storyteller. I for one, am excited to hear for the first time an old, but fresh-to-me story, that was so inspiring and enjoyable to my own, long-gone sailing heroes If you would like to listen to more about sailing, the sea and regular discussions about safety & seamanship; check out The Mariner Podcast, available on all podcast platforms. https://podcasts.apple.com/in/podcast/the-mariner/id1710667118 To support the production of this material please consider heading over to Patreon where for $5 a month you can get access to more audio books, videos, life streams and sailing discussion. https://www.patreon.com/themariner Check out also, The Mariner Youtube Channel - where we have gear reviews, how to videos, seamanship training videos and on the water reports from all over the world. https://youtu.be/t0cfY6HqjLA Edward William Insurance. Often when I am reading books in the Mariner's library I am also hearing the story for the first time myself- this book however, is different. Shackleton's escape from Antarctica is a story very well known to me and, to be blunt, has nourished my very soul in my darkest days at sea. There is no greater tale of seamanship, ingenuity, tenacity & loyalty- there are no greater heroes. This is that tale, told by a man who's skill upon the ocean is perhaps only matched by his skill with a pen; the Master of the 'Endurance', Captain Frank Worsley. Vanuatu_Sailing trip into the past_SV MariaNoa_#144e_english version ▬ ABOUT THIS FILM ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ The island nation of Vanuatu, with a population of 350,000, is surrounded by prosperous countries such as Australia, New Zealand, and New Caledonia, yet its gross domestic product is less than one-tenth that of its neighbors. Unexpectedly, we take a journey through time and immerse ourselves in the village structures that shape the lives of the population outside the capital city of Port Vila. Nestled in lush nature, we find houses in the well-kept village that are built from materials sourced from the surrounding rainforests. Family community is at the center of life: natural resources are shared. Do you have specific questions? We are happy to answer them at MariaNoa@gmx.de. ▬ CHAPTER ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ 00:00 Fiji - Vanuatu 02:39 Port Resolution 05:18 Lefakel 08:36 Port Resolution – Port Vila 09:26 Port Vila 09:50 Music Festival 10:39 Church service 12:16 Mele Beach Club 15:19 Tanna Coffee 15:47 Mele Cascades 17:03 Blue Lagoon 17:37 Maskelynes Islands 18:16 Dugong 20:14 Happy Birthday 21:45 Three Villages 26:21 Intro ▬ V I N T A G E ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ For many years, sailing around the world had been my (Hannes) big dream, which I wanted to realize when I reached retirement age due to my job. But sometimes life doesn't go as planned. In the spring of 2020, I was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. Suddenly, my life accelerated considerably. I sold my house, cleared out my belongings, and began to acquire mountains of sailing equipment. We planned to set sail at the beginning of March 2021—and that's what happened, despite COVID-19. Brigitta was completely surprised, of course, even though sailing around the world fit much better into her professional life than mine. But in the following six months, Brigitta has made amazing progress and is just as excited about our big adventure as I am. We have now been traveling for a total of four and a half years. One adventure follows another, and we enjoy every day anew. In search of freedom and independence, a thirst for adventure and a love of nature, we – Brigitta and Hannes – are sailing around the world together. For this circumnavigation, we bought the Lagoon 40 MariaNoa catamaran, with which we set off on the Barfußroute from the French Atlantic coast at the beginning of March 2021. Do you have any specific questions? We'd be happy to answer them at MariaNoa@gmx.de. ▬ Plan International ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ I have been volunteering for Plan International for many years. Alongside UNICEF, Save the Children, World Vision, and SOS Children's Villages, Plan International is one of the world's largest children's charities. On our trip, we don't just want to relax in idyllic bays, we also want to visit our sponsored children in Plan's program countries and volunteer to document the work being done there. This 65ft Hoek Classic, 'Weatherly', is a breathtaking sailing yacht, meticulously and comprehensively refitted to the highest standards. Acquired by her current owner in 2021, she was entrusted to KM Yachtbuilders in the Netherlands for a transformative 12-month refit. The result is, in essence, a brand-new yacht built within a classic hull. Almost every element, apart from the hull and decks, has been renewed with state-of-the-art systems, electronics, and technology, while the interior has undergone a complete refurbishment. 'Weatherly' may have a classic appearance with her Mahogany Epoxy hull; her performance is anything but traditional. With a deep draught and a displacement of only eighteen tons, Weatherly delivers remarkable speed under sail. She is sloop rigged with carbon spars, North Sails sails, Harken deck gear, and Navtec hydraulic rig controls. She is furthermore fitted out with a 110hp Yanmar diesel, 10hp bow thruster, feathering propeller, high-output alternator, chargers, inverters, a C-Zone digital switching and monitoring system, and 15kW of Lithium batteries. Further to that, a full Garmin navigation suite, life raft, water maker, teak passerelle, and more. Also worth mentioning are the fuel tanks that can hold nearly 1000 Liter. The interior of this 65ft Hoek is every bit as striking as her exterior. A raised pilothouse offers 360° views with comfortable seating to port and starboard. Just a few steps below, the elegant main salon welcomes you with a generous dining area and is fitted out with a Webasto heating system and a Dometic air conditioning system for all-season comfort. To starboard, the galley features an induction hob, oven, and twin refrigerators. To port, the navigation station puts every display and control within easy reach. Forward, the owner’s cabin offers a spacious double berth, sofa, and ample storage. Two additional berths amidships provide further accommodation. The bathroom is fitted with an electric toilet, shower, wash basin, and towel heater. 'Weatherly' truly has it all: classic beauty, cutting-edge performance, and luxurious comfort. The moment you step aboard, you’ll know you have found the yacht you’ve been searching for. Once again CNB has been working with Philippe Briand and Jean-Marc Piaton, this time to create a yacht which can be sailed in comfort by a couple. The result is the CNB 62, she builds on the success of the CNB Bordeaux 60 of which 46 were built. The CNB DNA remains but has evolved very significantly. Great thought has been given to making the cockpit and sailing systems even better suited to safe and rewarding short-handed sailing. An arch with a German main keeps the cockpit clear whilst still enabling proper control of the mainsail. The helm positions are forward enough to greatly help protection from the elements and to ensure a close connection with guests in the cockpit area. The deck area behind the helms provides another large relaxation area and below the cockpit floor, Briand has created enough volume for a 2,85 metre RIB to be stored longitudinally for ease of launching and recovery. Of course, the garage door creates a spacious bathing platform. The very comfortable owner’s suite is located forward with a centre-line bed and a generous bathroom. The saloon is bathed in natural light and has a superb galley which works equally well in harbour or on passage. The saloon enjoys almost 360-degree visibility and offers a seamless connection to the environment. Guest accommodation lies aft, the two cabins can be configured as doubles or twins and each has its own en-suite bathroom. Sailing performance is a given. A range of generous rigs is available with options for furling and easy handling whilst still getting the best from the modern Briand hull design. Machinery is centrally located under the saloon to ensure good weight distribution and excellent noise insulation. Quality and execution are outstanding. We believe anyone looking for a yacht which is blue-water capable without needing crew should take a close look at the CNB 62.
