The refit and restoration of a 77ft blue water cruiser Aglaia, a 77ft 15-year old yacht designed by Rob Humphreys, was sold by Berthon in the autumn of 2015. The new owner wanted her refitted and modernised; accordingly, a delivery crew brought her north to Berthon’s Lymington Shipyard in October 2015. This is the story of her comprehensive restoration, a project that spanned just 9 months and was completed entirely at Berthon. The deck was found to be only 7mm thick, on average, having suffered the wear and tear of 15 years at sea in largely tropical climes; the elements and years of cleaning had clearly taken their toll. The teak area was templated, the toe rail was lifted in one piece and the old deck carefully removed. Where the subdeck was found to be damaged in places, this was repaired in-situ. The new teak deck sections were laid on a fibreglass composite skin and, using an epoxy adhesive, it was glued to the subdeck with no through-deck fixings to prevent water leaks. Our sailing trip in Finnish Archipelago sea continued all the way down to Jumo. That rugged beautiful Island with great endless views. All the hospitality with local products were great, especially that warm smoked salmon that we tried. Also I had to do some maintenance work as the attachment for Autopilot was damaged during the sail. In addition to that, in Berghamn our anchor got stuck in the bottom and when I had to use force to lift it, it bended little bit so I had to fix that also. Fırtına her zaman geliyorum der ve gelir... Fethiye'de alargada iken bir lodos fırtınası atlatıyorum. Fırtına için hazırlıklarımı paylaşıyorum 🙃 Değişken barometre göstergesi, takipte olduğum hava durumu programları, denizci dostların uyarıları, sahil güvenliğin hava durumu anonsu derken... fırtına önceden yaklaştığını haber verir. Böylesi bir durumda fırtınanın eseceği yöne gitmeyi ve en sağlam limanda sığınmayı tercih ederim. Göcek'de iken de, Fethiye bu anlamda en makul karardı. Birçok sebepten Fethiye körfezi Poyraz rüzgarları hariç, çok korunaklı ve güvenli bir liman şehri; 👍 Olumlu yanları: 1- Kil yapılı balçık çamur zemin yapısı çok iyi demir tutuyor. 2- Zemin düzlemi değişken olmadığı için (çok fazla derinleşip sığılaşmıyor) demir taramaları nadir görülüyor. (tabii zincir kopup çapadan ayrılmaz ise) 👎 Olumsuz Yanları: 3- Üzerine 8 azmak deresi girişi ve 2 tersane ve şehir pisliği/çöpleri aktığı için deniz suyu maalesef çok kirli. 4- Demir toplarken zincir halkalarından çamuru temizlemek sıkıntılı bir süreç olabiliyor. (Elimde ekipman/techizat olmadığı için tuzlu su ve fırça kullanmıştım) ⚓️ Fırtınada hiçbir zaman tekneyi direnç altında tutmamayı öğrendim. Bu yüzden, her zaman alargaya çıkıp fırtınayı teknenin başında birbirimizi kollayarak atlatıyoruz. Tüm olası önlemleri aldıktan sonra; 1️⃣ yani iyi bir kaloma, 2️⃣ ırgat için bosa tutmak ve 3️⃣ çapariz oluşturabilecek tüm olasılıkları berteraf ettikten sonra, geri kalan süreci sadece zamana bırakıyoruz. 🌬Tabii bu videoda ben de nasıl hazırlandığımı detaylı anlatıyorum. We didn't expect to adore the Galápagos' most touristy island, but we did! We explored the town of Puerto Ayora, walked some of the most incredible stretches of beach we've ever seen, marveled at the marine iguanas, trekked through a lava tunnel, saw giant tortoises in action (literally and figuratively) in the wild, and scuba'd with sea lions and sharks. GTFO plan #3: Scariest moment - our boat taking on water We want to share our GTFO plan to retire early and sail the world. In this video, our practice boat takes on water. It was very scary and we were lucky we were able to get an emergency haul. Learn from our mistakes and how we would handle it differently in the future! We plan to retire June 1, 2023, Dennis’s mandatory retirement date when he will have served 30 years in the Army. We currently own a 1984 Catalina 30’ monohull sailboat on the Chesapeake Bay. This is our practice boat and is not designed for the open ocean and too small for full-time, liveaboard life. We plan to buy a Neel 51’ trimaran (http://www.neel-trimarans.com/modele_bateau/neel-51/). A trimaran is much safer than a catamaran, more comfortable than a monohull, faster to escape bad weather, and spacious to accommodate our Brady Bunch, and possibly you!
