Weaving our catamaran into Hill Inlet for the first time was both breathtaking and nerve-wracking. This stunning channel near Whitehaven Beach is known for its beauty – and its shallow, winding approach. We threaded our way in with just 0.1m under the keel, holding our breath as we nudged ARGO through the twists and turns within the inlet. We’d hoped to beach the boat and scrub the hulls on the sand, but with murky water, a swift current, and the tide not in our favour, we changed plans and jumped in where we anchored. It wasn’t ideal, but she got a much-needed clean. Before heading back out, we reassessed everything. Jason walked the shallows at low tide and manually plotted a safe course into Navionics. With the next high tide approaching, we made our move – and slipped back out just before sunset, nerves intact and beers well deserved. ⛵️ In this episode: – First-time sail into Hill Inlet’s narrow, snake-like channel – A tense moment with 0.1m under our keel – Hull cleaning in less-than-ideal conditions – Plotting a manual track out – Escaping safely at sunset, with a beer to celebrate Thanks for watching. This was my (Dave Grundy) first time back on board sailing, since Oct 2019! Sailing with John Cranwell Ward on Soling- Time Flies. We decided to join in the sociable round the lake race with fellow members and sailing in good company. Whilst the clouds threatened rain, they sailed on by and we enjoyed some excellent sailing. Already planning my next sail. Thanks John for your company and leading me through our new safety process which worked really well.

We travel from Picton through the Marlborough Sounds and then visit Nelson. From here we drive out to Farewell Spit and then travel down past the Nelson Lakes and south along the West Coast visiting Punakaiki and the Glaciers.

Make along with us our condensed spin on the very mysterious, dance party-inducing Singapore Sling. The drink was so good that we actually forgot to end the video, ha. Ooops. Those fancy 1920's ladies were definitely on to something!!!! The original recipe was created in 1915 at the Long Bar at The Raffles Hotel, Singapore. You can still order one today. It contains gin, cherry liqueur, Cointreau, DOM Benedictine, grenadine, pineapple juice, lime juice, angostura bitters, shaken, no ice. We kept it simple with (this is one serving- sip it slow...you've been warned!) 1 and 1/2 shots gin 1/2 shot cherry brandy 1/2 shot Drambuie (because we couldn't find Benedictine on Grenada) a couple dashes of angostura bitters and a couple more of orange bitters- we really like The Bitter Truth brand...especially the orange- it's very versatile, making it a great bar addition. We went for a a couple big square ice cubes, topped with soda water and some maraschino cherries. Thank you to the Culture Trip blog for the entertaining history lesson, that's where Lauren was reading from at the beginning of the video.
