In this episode, we set sail from the picturesque Stromness on the Orkney Islands, navigating the rugged north coast of Scotland. Our destination? The small fishing harbour of Kinlochbervie. We spend a peaceful night at anchor in Loch Eriboll, preparing for the next leg of our adventure: rounding the notorious Cape Wrath, the most north-westerly point of mainland Great Britain. Our original plan is to take the safer offshore route around Cape Wrath, but with the unexpectedly calm weather, we decide to spice things up. Spontaneously, we opt for the more thrilling inshore route between Duslic Rock and the rugged cliffs of Cape Wrath. The gamble pays off, and we are rewarded with breathtaking close in views of this famous landmark in the calm waters. The journey continues as we make our way to Kinlochbervie, a fishing harbour known for its excellent shelter in any conditions. The coastal scenery is awe-inspiring, and we capture the beauty of the rugged Scottish landscape. Waiting for the delivery of a new camera body, we decide to venture to a secluded and beautiful anchorage off the beaten track. Here, we drop our lobster pot in clear and pristine waters. Did we catch anything? To wrap up our day, we indulge in an early dinner at The Shorehouse seafood restaurant, a local gem conveniently located around the corner from our anchorage. The meal features freshly caught delights, courtesy of the skilled local fishermen. #lostcitytrek #lostcity #travelcolombia #travelfamily #treks #besttreks #travel When someone said they were headed to Colombia to trek to the Lost City, my ears pricked up as I imagined adventure, stories, beautiful places and a good challenging hike. This is the 1st part of the trek, the 2nd part will be in the next episode. We were not disappointed and set off with 10 other people adults and 18 kids, ranging from ages 6 to 17 plus us 5 so we had a massive group. We decided to go with Turcol who organise these treks and they provided an additional 2 translators, 2 guides and 2 cooks as well as a pack of mules to carry all the food. We all had to carry our own gear. The first day we were transported up to the mountains by 4 wheel drive over the tricky terrain . Lunch was a generous portion of chicken, rice, plantain and salad. Then off we set on a 4 - 5 hour hike , some of it through thick mud in the pouring rain. We stayed the first night in base camp 1 by a flowing river. The second day was a long hike of 7 - 8 hours in total to the 2nd base camp, stopping on the way for lunch and fruit snacks. The 3rd day, we did the very steep trail to the Lost City at the top where we learnt more about the Kogi Indians and how and why they built this city here. On the same day we had to hike back to another base camp where we stayed the night before the final Day 4 trek to the bottom again. Sleeping & eating: Every night we slept in rows of wooden bunk beds with good mosquito nets, clean sheets, pillows and blankets. The food was excellent, a healthy mixture of protein, carbs , fruits and veggies with fruit snacks along the way. We left Nuku Hiva in some squally weather, , but then had a great sail to the Tuamotus. Only had time to explore Fakarava atoll and it didn’t disappoint! Entered in the North pass and left a few days later via the South pass. Dived the South pass with Topdive and was fantastic. It was about a week before the first full moon of July, when thousands of Sharks gather in the pass waiting for the grouper fish to spawn. At night, it is apparently a feeding frenzy a la grouper, although the sharks (and grouper) were very chilled during our dive - thankfully! The bit we saw of the Tuamotu’s was truly stunning and we were fortunate to have sublime weather
