This episode discusses a recent drowning death of a paddleboarder at my small Colorado mountain lake. This is the 10th water recreation death of 2025 in Colorado. The last few years have been extremely dangerous with more people visiting the lakes and more frequent extreme weather. In 2022, Colorado set a new record for water recreation deaths with 42 recorded for the season. In both 2023 and 2024 there were 32 water recreation related deaths each year across the state. In this latest incident, the 33-year old male victim was not wearing a life vest or personal flotation device (PFD) and was thrown off his board by heavy winds and large waves. Anyone who enjoys water sports needs to have the proper safety gear and pay close attention to the weather. Don't put yourself at a disadvantage when the unexpected happens! Our family sailing adventure continues with the Sailing Kids on day 4 of the summer holiday trip. We go to Rangipukea Island by Te Kouma, off the coast of the Coromandel. Also as the Covid-19 / Coronavirus pandemic is well underway, Blake shows you his entry into the bowline Emirates Team New Zealand competition (ETNZ). The boys play a jaguar game on the beach, where they pretend to be black jaguars and hide around rocks and play together. Toby also finds a Kina (sea egg) that keeps moving even though it has been eaten by fish. We are two brothers, aged 4 and 7, who love going on sailing family adventures - exploring the outdoors and finding super cool wild animals, bugs and marine life. So along with our parents, we’re sailing the world, exploring islands, and looking for interesting wildlife. We start our adventure sailing New Zealand but dream of sailing around the Mediterranean some day. We love our planet and want to look after our environment, so through our travels we hope other kids will feel inspired to care for our planet and wildlife too. He has an MFA in nonfiction from Columbia University, where he was a Dean’s Fellow and taught in the Undergraduate Writing Program. Dan was a Steinbeck Fellow at the Martha Heasley Cox Center for Steinbeck Studies at San Jose State University. He has taught writing at Columbia University and San Jose State. Before pursuing his MFA, he worked as the city reporter for the Santa Cruz Sentinel. Charles Hood grew up in Atwater beside the Los Angeles River. He has been a bird guide in Africa, a translator in New Guinea, and a National Science Foundation Artist-in-Residence in Antarctica. He is the author of many books and essays including A Californian’s Guide to the Birds among Us. Charles has received numerous fellowships and writing awards, and his most recent artist-in-residence positions were with the National Science Foundation in Antarctica and with Playa Arts in Oregon. He has also been a visiting professor in England, Mexico, and Papua New Guinea.
