All the boats, bar one, have scored bullets at the RC44 Portorož Cup after two new teams added their names to the list of race winners here in Slovenia. So far in eight races six teams have scored bullets. Having been briefly held ashore, the RC44 fleet ventured out of Marina Portorož into a 6-8 knot on shore westerly and an almost lake-like sea. In the first race, Chris Bake’s Team Aqua successfully repeated yesterday’s tactic of winning the pin and ‘owning the left’ side of the course. Once again this helped them round the top mark in first place but with Hugues Lepic’s Aleph Racing hanging on to their coattails in second. The team of the London-based Frenchman, which seems to enjoy the flat water on offer on Piran Bay, split from Team Aqua at the leeward gate and sneaked ahead up the second beat. From there they hung on to secure the first race of the day for themselves. John Bassadone and the crew of Peninsula Petroleum have been getting to know their new tactician American Ed Baird, who is standing in for the ebullient Italian Vasco Vascotto this week. In race two the Gibraltar-based team managed to find a clear lane coming into the top to lead around ahead of Team Aqua and proceeded to extend from there. The RC44 Portoroz Cup 9 May until 13 May is the second event of the RC44 Championship Tour which pits the world's top businessmen and the best sailors in the industry compete in high-performance one-design 44-foot carbon racing yachts. The Volvo Ocean Race returned to historic Newport, R.I. in the Spring of 2018 for the lone North American Stopover of the 2017-2018 round-the-globe sailing race. US Sailing was honored to have a unique opportunity to participate in this exhilarating event and the festivities and educational activities involved on site. The US Sailing Reach Initiative, a national STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) educational program to inspire sailing programs and schools to utilize sailing as a teaching platform, was one of the exhibitions at the One Ocean Exploration Zone. As part of the US Sailing Reach STEMcation program and through the support of both US Sailing donors and Endeavour Community Sailing, two US Sailing Reach Initiative students from the Kauai Sailing Association, two students from Endeavour Community Sailing, and two students from the Community Boating Center of New Bedford were selected to participate at the Volvo Ocean Race Newport Stopover for a four-day STEM/sailing experience of a lifetime.

Leaving Spitzbergen the engine sea water cooling pump died and we made emergency repairs to get to Norway. We cruised the rugged northern islands of Scotland and the west coast of Ireland. After Christmas on Long Island, courtesy of a 747, we made a double-handed passage to St. Martin; two old men with and average age of about 75. On the way home we visited the worker’s paradise of Cuba, and left it in stormy weather for the Bahamas and then Bermuda. Adam Minoprio might have again steered the Omani boat to three victories from five heats today, but Arnaud Psarofaghis notched up a cleaner set of results to close in on their rivals by a single point on the leaderboard. With a light forecast, the opening day of the GC32 Oman Cup looked like it might be marginal. However in the end four out of five of the scheduled races were sailed just north of the Al Mouj marina with a challenging set of wind conditions at times enabling the GC32s to fly fully, sometimes to hull fly only and at other times leaving the ultra-high performance catamarans with both hulls firmly ‘low-‘riding in displacement mode.

This headsail has been made for an Olson 25, from our Precision Racing Laminate Series, Contender Sailcloth's ZZP09 Black Polyester Racing Laminate.
