Episode 55 – Delmarva Circumference – Legs 6-7 – From Magothy River to Hudson Creek to Solomons. Join “Moments in Time” for the last legs of our odyssey as we depart Little Island in the Magothy River and head south into familiar waters of the Chesapeake Bay. The day started with a reefed main and fog before shaking the reef out in the diminishing winds as we pass under the Chesapeake Bay Bridge. We were on watch for floating debris due to the excessive high tides that the bay was experiencing. We kept an eye on the weather and realized that it was not going to improve so we headed further south than originally planned. We enjoyed a quiet anchor in Hudson Creek off the Little Choptank River as Toni cooked shrimp linguini for dinner. The following day we reluctantly headed back to the Patuxent River, ending our seven-and-a-half-day odyssey around the Delmarva Peninsula. Delmarva stands for Delaware, Maryland, and Virginia and often refers to the eastern peninsula surrounded by the Chesapeake Bay to the west and south, the Atlantic Ocean to the east, and the Chesapeake and Delaware (C&D) canal to the north. Circumnavigating the Delmarva Peninsula is a fun voyage to plan as you have to account for weather, winds, waves, tides, anchorages, various courses, and of course, adventure. Besides the auto pilot, the one piece of equipment that makes shorthanded sailing easier and more enjoyable is my Lazy Cradle. Controlling a mainsail when you lower it can be a challenge even with full crews, but when shorthanded, it can be a bigger problem. However, with my Lazy Cradle, that problem goes away. A Lazy Cradle is a sail cover that is attached to the top of the boom under the mainsail and the upper edges are raised in place with the boat’s lazy jacks. The lazy jacks guide the sail down into the cover. With the Lazy Cradle I can literally drop my mainsail into the cover faster than a furling main can be rolled into the mast or boom. I just release the halyard and gravity does the rest. Coming into a harbor is no problem; just drop the sail and it is out of the way without the need to flake or furl. With the sail in the cover, you can concentrate on the channel and traffic instead of sail handling. Then, when I’m at anchor, I can zip the cover over the sail and then zip the front piece that goes around the mast and the sail is protected from the sun’s harmful UV rays until our next sail.

We arrive at Miri Marina and before we can even think about exploring, the first job is organising multiple fuel runs to top up several boats with diesel. Soon after, Emma joins us and we head inland to explore the incredible Niah Caves — a fascinating glimpse into Borneo’s ancient past. Setting sail eastward, the calm conditions don’t last. Out of nowhere, a sudden tropical storm hits, with winds jumping from just 6 knots to over 40 in seconds. Thankfully, we manage to get the sails down in time, but our buddy boat isn’t as lucky and suffers some damage in the chaos. We continue on through Brunei, passing the Sultan’s palace and enjoying a beautifully protected anchorage before pushing on toward Labuan. There, we encounter our most polluted anchorage yet. It takes several attempts to set the anchor, repeatedly fouled by plastic rubbish covering the seabed. It’s a sobering reminder of the reality beneath the surface — but Labuan’s duty-free shopping, especially the chocolate, helps soften the experience.
