Imagine discovering a log that had just floated down a Tasmanian River in a storm and building an ocean going yacht out of it. Not just any log, but a rare Huon Pine log, felled 40 years earlier from a tree estimated at 1,000 years old. Thats what Derek Shields set out to do, with no background in boat building. After years sailing on other peoples yachts, he had found a John Muir design in 1982 and he decided to build it. 3 years and thousands of hours later, ‘Sagan’ was launched. Following Sagan’s launch, Derek set off on an adventure that took him up the east coast of Australia and across the Indian Ocean to Africa where he spent 10 months travelling through 17 different countries by road. The small farming village of Veron had been a quiet, peaceful place for as long as anyone could remember. While the locals made enough money to get by, there was never quite enough to make a real difference in their lives. That all changed one day when the villagers were out harvesting their rice crop and noticed something strange in the paddy - glints of gold! Word quickly spread throughout the village that they had discovered gold in their paddy and soon, everyone was abuzz with excitement over this newfound wealth. The elders of Veron wasted no time in organizing an small operation on the properly extract the gold with a home built dredge which it was very basic and a lot of gold was being lost . If black gold sands could get their equipment into this site could be 10 times more effective. The first two hours turned up nearly an ounce of gold.Everyone cheered with jubilation; finally, here was something that would change their fortunes for good! With such potential riches at hand, plans began to take shape about how best to use it: building new infrastructure projects like roads and schools; investing into local businesses so more jobs could be created; or even simply distributing it among the people so each family could have some extras security. We use our Genoa for the first time in light winds and foggy conditions. When we sail into the harbour we loose our wind and Mark has to do some sculling. Another Clip of Jeff, James and I cruising to the Whitsunday's, was puff up to 20 knots and Liahona was crushing along, seas were bigger than it looks, 2-3 metres, we hit 15 knots on this run and Liahona just cruised along, held a straight line and was very comfortable. We had been taking 3 hour shifts throughout the night so we were all a bit tied but in good spirits.

Estamos em Bocas del Toro há uma semana e aproveitando bastante a região. Para se locomover entre as ilhas, os locais usam um serviço de “táxi boat” que custa apenas 1 dólar por trajeto. É uma maneira prática, rápida e econômica de explorar as diferentes ilhas e praias da região. Chegamos há uma semana e estamos na Marina, onde passamos a maior parte do tempo. Desde que chegamos, quase todos os dias fizemos passeios até a cidade, que oferece uma variedade de bons restaurantes, padarias e frutarias. É um lugar bastante acolhedor, com uma infraestrutura adequada para turistas e visitantes, além de várias opções para experimentar a culinária local e comprinhas de frutas frescas. No Panamá, especialmente em Bocas del Toro, a moeda oficial é o Balboa; porém, o dólar americano é amplamente aceito e utilizado como moeda corrente, facilitando bastante as transações. Por isso, não foi necessário trocar dinheiro para nossa estadia aqui, já que podemos pagar tudo com dólares. Estamos com um pequeno problema com o alternador, que não está carregando as baterias como deveria. Já levamos para o conserto e estamos aguardando que o serviço seja concluído. The all-female crew on The Famous Project CIC have set off on an attempt to capture the Jules Verne Trophy and break the round the world record. The Jules Verne Trophy, which is displayed at the National Maritime Museum in Paris, is the prize for the fastest circumnavigation of the world by any type of yacht with no restrictions on the size of the crew, provided the vessel has registered with the organisation and paid an entry fee. A vessel holding the Jules Verne trophy may not necessarily hold the absolute round the world record, although it currently does. It was initially awarded to the yacht which sailed around the world in less than 80 days, as per the Jules Verne novel Around the World in Eighty Days in which Phileas Fogg traversed the planet. The current holder is IDEC Sport skippered by Francis Joyon who completed the circumnavigation in 40 days, 23 hours, 30 minutes and 30 seconds, finishing on 26th January 2017. Joyon sailed 26,412 nautical miles at an average speed of 26.85 knots. Skippered by Alexia Barrier, with Dee Caffari as first officer, together with an international crew of six female sailors, The Famous Project CIC crossed the start line on the maxi trimaran IDEC Sport at 13.40 UTC on Saturday 29th November. To complete the course, they must round the three great capes: Cape of Good Hope, Cape Leeuwin, and Cape Horn. It is the first time since 1998 that there has been an all-female attempt at the record, when Tracy Edwards and crew on Royal & Sun Alliance were dismasted 2,000 miles from Cape Horn.
