We sailed to Lady Musgrave Island - one of our favourite coral cays at the southern tip of the Great Barrier Reef. 🏝️ Before we could explore, we had to navigate a narrow channel, dodge swirling eddies, and avoid a few coral bombies. Sailing offshore in the winter months looking for Northern Gannets and North Atlantic Right Whales. The females and calves use the shallow and warm continental shelf to have their young after an 18 month gestation period. The calves grow at an amazing 50 lbs per, HOUR! Yep, they have to put on a thick layer of blubber to survive the colder northeastern coast during the summer months when their food source is rich and plentiful. What an amazing ocean creature experience. We stayed super far away to give them room to do what Whales do. Have you ever heard a 🐋 whale? Sounds like a lion roar, a grizzly bear, or an alligator rumble! Mark continues his travels on his modified Cape Dory 36 Swan on the third leg of his Atlantic circle cruise, sailing from Horta, Azores in June 2025 to Praia da Vitoria on the island of Terceira. On August 25 he departed Azores for a 5 day passage to Porto Santo (Madeira). After a brief layover he made a passage to Agadir, Morocco in just under 4 days, completing his first Atlantic crossing. The next leg will be his passage from Morocco to Cape Verde. A unique aspect of this voyage is that for auxiliary propulsion he is using a tilt-up 6kw electric outboard in a custom built well in the lazarette locker.
