Today's vlog: We are manoeuvring out of the reef trough the shallow pass again. This time with high tide so we have 0,5 meter extra water under the keel ;) We set sail to the big island of Wadi Gemal, a national parc. We will take it easy, enjoy the beautiful reefs of the red sea and keep an eye on the corona regulations of the ports we pass. Since many countries are closed we don't know where we will be allowed to go on land again, but we can survive 4 month without seeing anybody :) This journey is only a small part of our trip that started 2 years ago. In Spain we decided to go with our own boat, and in no time we were the happy owners of 'Messenger'. The Solomon Islands consist of six major islands and over 900 smaller islands. They're located on the southeastern corner of the Coral Triangle, just northeast of Australia. The Solomon Islands sit within the global epicenter of biodiversity, the Coral Triangle. Thus, you can expect to encounter an overwhelming amount of marine life. This includes beautiful little reef fish that dance like glitter suspended in the water column, larger schooling fish like snappers, jacks, and parrot fish, and awe-inspiring pelagic species like manta rays, reef sharks, and barracuda. Hopefully, we'll also find some weird benthic creatures like scorpion fish, signal gobies, and maybe even a seahorse! Given the Solomons' unique geographic location, straddling the border of Southeast Asia and the South Pacific islands, we'll see a mixture of both of these underwater worlds. We'll see reefs similar to those found around North Sulawesi, where hard and soft corals form a carpet of color and texture. Also, we'll see that many of the reefs share topographic features with Fiji- crevices illuminated by piercing beams of light. There are even a couple of wrecks for us to explore, including some from WWII.

Le quatirème jour, nous avions prévu de monter en haut du volcan de la Souffrière. Malheureusement, comme souvent autour des volcans, le temps était vraiment très dégradé. Nous sommes arrivés au sommet mais nous n'avons pas pu approcher du cratère qui est désormais accessible uniquement avec un guide. Ce fut une journée dantesque mais mémorable. Avec le mauvais temps, nous n'avons fait que très peu de photos et de vidéos afin de ne pas abîmer notre matériel. Ces séquence ont été tournées simplement avec nos smartphones d'où une qualité vidéo moyenne. Ces vidéos s'adressent en premier lieu à nos famille et nos proches mais j'ai décidé de les mettre en public afin de permettre à d'autres de voir quelques images de ces endroits magnifiques. Nach dem Glück folgt die Katastrophe. Denn auf dem Weg zu den Azoren bricht der Mast der Jambo. Ich kann mich und das Boot retten und erreiche mit Mühe St. Martin. Die Jambo braucht einen neuen Mast und die Geschichte nimmt ihren Lauf. Im Nachhinein weiß ich nicht, was schlimmer war: den Mast zu verlieren oder einen neuen zu bekommen. Watch the 'hatching' of two duckling dinghies acquired for David and Kristi Aisher's daughters, Sophie and Penny. A short naming and christening ceremony took place on 9th April 2016 at the well-known (and very classic) Elephant Boatyard near the Hamble (UK). Sophie and Penny respectively named their boats, SWALLOW and AMAZON with a splash of Prosecco. In a fluky breeze, David and Sophie launched and sailed 'Amazon' while Kristi and Penny sailed away from the slipway in 'Swallow'. The 9ft Duckling dinghy was designed by renowned yacht designer and sailor Uffa Fox, they were produced in mass by Fairey Marine, on the Hamble in the 1960's. Using the hot-moulded double diagonal technique, a construction method very characteristic of Fairey Marine, they're strong and versatile, featuring a mahogany capping rail and sculling notch in the transom. These two Ducklings join a very impressive lineage of yachts in the Aisher family. They have hatched into, possibly, one of Britain's greatest sailing families – the Aishers – famous for their offshore sailing successes, very closely attached to the Royal Ocean Racing Club; through several generations, they commissioned the build(s) and campaigned the 'Yeoman's from the 1930's onwards. David's grandfather, Sir Owen Aisher, was the Admiral of the Royal Ocean Racing Club and commissioned a succession of world-class yachting campaigns. These two lucky duckling dinghies will join David and Kristi, Sophie and Penny as they cruise on board their gaff cutter yacht, THALIA.
