Myth of Malham Race | Tradition, Tenacity, and Triumph RORC Myth of Malham Race 2025 Start : Saturday May 24th, 2025 Course : Cowes – Eddystone Lighthouse-North Head Buoy (approx. 235nm) Organised by the Royal Ocean Racing Club in association with the Royal Yacht Squadron. First held in 1958, the Myth of Malham Race has built a rich legacy for more than six decades of offshore racing. The 2025 edition proudly joins the ranks of its most memorable chapters. The race brought together the largest fleet seen in RORC racing since the record-setting 2023 Rolex Fastnet Race. A total of 140 yachts carrying over 900 sailors from 28 nations lined up for the 235-nautical mile offshore challenge. 12 Boats destined for the 2025 Admiral’s Cup were among the diverse RORC armada with professional sailors and passionate corinthians racing with the Royal Ocean Racing Club. The 2025 Myth of Malham marked the sixth event in the RORC Season’s Points Championship, the world’s largest offshore racing series. It also played a pivotal role in the season, acting as a key qualifier for the 2025 Rolex Fastnet Race, as well as a crucial leg in the new RORC Cowes Offshore Series. French Mastery and Family Firepower Light Up the Podium The 2025 Myth of Malham belonged to Géry Trentesaux’s Ker 43 Long Courrier which stormed to victory, claiming the overall win under IRC after a near flawless offshore performance. But it was no runaway win, Foggy Dew skippered by the ever-canny Noël Racine, snapped at his heels, finishing just under three minutes behind on corrected time in a nail-biting finale. Rounding out the podium was Sun Fast 3300 Orbit, continuing its blistering form this season. While known for double-handed racing, Orbit went fully crewed for this showdown. At the heart of the team: father-and-son duo Dan and Zeb Fellows, joined by Volvo Ocean Race champion Jules Salter and his son Fred—a potent blend of experience, youth, and offshore pedigree. In this episode, we visit the beautiful beachside town of San Vito Lo Capo, a favourite stop on Sicily’s western coast, and set out on our overnight passage to Sardinia. After a day and night in a rolling sea, we arrive and drop anchor at Spiaggia del Riso, near Villasimius — a quiet and welcome landfall. The next day brings a lovely sail across the Gulf as we make our way westward to a popular anchorage just east of Cagliari, Sardinia’s vibrant capital. We have never been to Sardinia, so we are looking forward to exploring this sailing paradise together. We know Midwest sailors when we see them! This will be Steph and Maggie's second Olympic Games together in the 49erFX. We saw them in Chicago before they went back to Marseille in the final lead-up to racing in July. They answered all of our pressing questions like, "Who will go to the official measurement?" and "Who is looking after the boat right now if you're here in Chicago?" We arrive in St. Martin to an anchorage covered in boat! It was more boats than we had ever seen. All of our boat friends were here and we were excited. We anchored our boat and then headed into town to meet up with friends, try out the new pastries and check it all out. Afterwards we took the dinghy to the other side of St. Martin, St. Martin. We picked up a few things we needed and checked out the adorable town. We came back to the boat and started doing our usual clean-up and laundry. Kami wasn't feeling too well from the passage so she took it easy. Easton's ear infections weren't healing so he was on strict orders to stay out of the water. That didn't last long. The next morning Steve and I did a run/hike to the top of the hill on St. Martin. We overlooked the anchorage. When we got back to the boat Karver pulled his tooth out all by himself! Later that day we walked to the grocery store. It was one of the prettiest well kept stores we had seen. The produce looked so fresh and amazing! That evening Brett and Brett Jr. on Colette joined us. The next day Steve and Eric on the boat Teek took off on a long run to the other side of the island. They were both exhausted when they got back. Too bad though because today was the day we went to see the low flying planes! Maho Beach is a popular spot where the airplanes fly in real low over the beach. People everywhere come to see it. It was pretty fun to take all the boys. We had a blast! Teek also came with us. When we got back to the boat the kids all did water sports. Pulling behind the dinghy, tubing, wakeboarding, e-foiling you name it! Afterwards Steve took some kids to snorkel a large rock and do a little cliff jumping. They saw some turtles and sea life and had a blast. That evening the adults and older kids all went out to a fancy dinner. We tried new foods like snails. It was so fun and so nice! The next day we changed anchorages to a more remote area with hardly anyone around. Just our buddy boats. As a family we walked into town to the grocery store, only to realize it was a french holiday and it was closed. The kids were so annoyed. We hitch hiked back which was nice. We then lifted anchor and moved to a little remote island with just our buddy boat family. We had a blast on the beach that day and then that night all the kids got the wild idea that they wanted to set up camp and camp on the beach. It was so cute seeing how excited they were and all the prep they put into it. They made beds and bathrooms you name it! It's also cute to see the older kids hanging with the younger ones. They were loud and having a blast all night. The next morning Steve went onto shore to pick them all up. Malia was exhausted. The boys were too. That day all the boats left in different directions. We headed around the corner of St. Martin to do a big provision before heading to St. Barts. We anchored in a sketchy area that was pretty shallow. We left the kids on the boat and Steve and I rented a tiny car and headed into town to hit up the Cost Plus (Which is like a Costco) and some other stores. We did a huge haul! On the way back we got stuck in Carnival traffic which was fun to see. The women have many different costumes and everyone is so happy. The kids helped us unload groceries and put them all away. This process takes forever and the kids are such troopers! I love how we work together as a family to get it done. The next morning we lifted anchor and started our sail to St. Barts. Steve had Malia do all the captain work. She was at the helm and did it all, I was so proud. The boys fished along the way, but there was so much sargasm it made it tough. We made it to St. Barts and it looked absolutely stunning!
After our last stay in Marseille, we sailed further along the southern French coast to the islands of Hyères. The island of Porquerolles is the largest and westernmost of this group of islands. It is about 7.5 kilometers long, 3 kilometers wide. The island has beautiful sheltered bays with azure blue water. Here you can see our catamaran: Porquerolles was uninhabited for centuries, a rugged nature reserve. Until in 1912 it was bought by a Belgian entrepreneur. The island was his private property from 1912 to 1935. He built roads, drainage canals and vineyards on the island. He had a school built for his workers and their families and founded a cooperative. He died on the island in 1935 and was also buried there. It remained the property of his heirs until 1971, when it was sold to the French state. It's a lovely island to cycle, walk or paddleboard on the azure water!
