After a late arrival in Roche Harbor, we take the next day to visit the sculpture park and the mausoleum. We found lobster on the dock and realize that Maya is a fine gourmet! Having enough of tourists and music we decide to head to Stuart Island. The first two days are amazing. Episode 030 Since moving aboard our sailboat, Te Tāiko, we have been on a steep learning curve. Two mistakes we have recently made is not knowing the actual size of our water tanks and properly managing our water use. Managing resources is essential when choosing to live off grid. We had been having such a good time that we let this slip a bit. We have chosen to live by the principle of keeping things simple. Therefore, we keep Tāiko as simple as we can so that we can sail and live on her but we're not stuck fixing her in exotic and remote locations. One of the ways we keep her simple is by not having a water maker. Fortunately for us though, we have a custom made rain catcher and we live in New Zealand, which is known as the land of the long white cloud, so we knew it would be only a matter of time before we could fill Tāiko's water tanks again. We could have sailed back to the marina and filled our tanks but that option is not always going to be available to us and buying packaged water is not an option for us as it's expensive and unsustainable. Better to start learning alternative ways now. Plus, this way is far more fun and makes us feel like we've achieved something! We hope you enjoy it! As always, thanks for watching. By living a more minimalistic and sustainable lifestyle, she has provided us with a better work/life balance and has taught us to live and be present more in the moment. Tāiko has also taught us to be more independent and less reliant on services. Some of these experiences have taken us out of our comfort zone many times but as the saying goes, ‘a comfort zone is a wonderful place but nothing grows there’. Our plan is to do blue water cruising. So, over the next year we will be completing some maintenance work on Tāiko and be getting her ready to meet New Zealand’s category 1 requirements to be able to go offshore. A month left at the dock and we finally found our Sailboat Dinghy! Finding a new to us rigid ride inflatable boat and not just breaking the bank with a new one was a daunting task. We search from west to east coast Florida finding rubbish or way out of budget. Then we stumbled across Lifeline Marine Safety Services and found the dinghy that was right for us. Funny the shop was just minutes from Cape Marina vs the miles we thought we needed to go to find that jewel. The staff at Lifeline Marine Safety Services was amazing, they helped us with minor issues with our new to us dinghy. They even helped us get the inflatable to the dock saving us time and effort. Ones we had our dinghy she needed a little TLC and we also had to beef up our davit pully system. So in this video we go over how to replace a carburetor on a Nissan outboard. Then we add a 6 to 1 pulley system on our davits.
