When I teach I often see these basic mistakes. This video is to help you to identify the most common mistakes when learning to gybe.
Learning how to gybe can be complicated, and easy to get confused with tacking. It all comes down to a series of simple steps, one after another. This video shows you a land drill which is a good place to start. Practicing on land should give you familiarity of what to do with your hands.
See how to gybe from our onboard footage. Follow the steps and try to remember them. It is good to spend time to get your technique right as this will reduce your capsize rate and increasae the safety of you and your crew
So just when you thought you had mastered all the ropes and sails.... we add another one! The spinnaker is the sail that really powers the boat. Nowadays these tend to be assymetric in design and launched from a fixed bowsprit. But be aware that there are other types of spinnaker that this video DEOS NOT cover. These are the types of spinnaker that have a removable pole and symmetrical in shape. Follow this video if you have an assymetric sail to deal with
This video shows you hoe to gybe your boat when the spinnaker is in use.
Strong wind sailing with a spinnaker is just great. The thrill of the speed is fantastic, the spray flies and the boat really motors. Here we show you what to look for when sailing with a spinnaker in strong winds
How does a spinnaker work? What does it do and how do I control it. This video is aimed to help you to identify what to do in launching and controlling the spinnaker. Try a light wind day first to get the hang of it
How to lower a spinnaker. This can be tricky if you want to avoid running the sail over. It all comes down to teamwork. The trick is for the crew to pass the control sheets to the helmsman and they then lower the sail. With the helm holding the sheet, this avoids the sail flogging in the wind and running away out of control
Good luck here! Speed is your friend here. Try to build the courage to hit the gybe ( jibe ) at maximum speed. This places the rig under the lowest load and makes the maneouvre light. But note if you drop off the plane the boat slows, the rig loads up and the inevitable capsize is often the outcome. Have the courage to go for it!
Watch this video to get a grasp of the key learning points for sailing with an asymmetric spinnaker. Try to remember them all to avoid creating bad habbits
This video is a recap of how to right a capsized dinghy. As you learn to sail you will become to accept a capsize as just another maneouvre in the sport. Remember these points to help you the next time you go for a swim.
Everyone capsizes, in fact some folk say that if you don't then you aren't trying hard enough! Whilst I don't fully subscribe to that point of view it is vital that you know how to deal with a capsize. When I teach the capsize seems to be a session of apprehension, but once people realise that it isn't as hard as it first seems this is resolved. The trick is good communication between helm and crew, keep in direct contact with the boat and then apply gentle but EVEN pressure to the boat as you pull her up. If you pull hard there is a chance you wont be able to sustain the pressure so you relax and the boat falls back in. Gentle and even pressure will bring the boat up.

Eric Beauchemin Top to Bottom run through the Stubai Park Subscribe to Onboard Here - http://bit.ly/1gpxJM5 We followed Eric Beauchemin through the Stubai park in the second of our new Top to Bottom series of edits. The idea with these is to give a rider the fredom to ride the park exactly how they want and to present the footage in a raw, honest way. Eric pulled out all the stops with this run chucking a 50-50 front 540 off and a massive cab 270. Jamie Nicholls Top to Bottom run in Stubai Park Subscribe to Onboard Here - http://bit.ly/1gpxJM5 We continue our top to bottom series with Yorkshire wonder man-child Jamie Nicholls. Jamie blew us away with his consistency when we filmed him here and he stomped this run second try before doing it all again third try for his instawang. Remember that these top to bottom runs are all about showing snowboarding in it's rawest form: no fancy editing, no music and the freedom to ride the hill whichever way the rider sees fit.
