Leg 8 - after a light start, the crews found themselves in frustratingly changeable conditions as they left Lisbon behind them. Team SCA led around Cape Finisterre and from then on it was heavy going through the Bay of Biscay and beyond with little sleep as the fleet chased the girls all the way to the finish. Comeback kids Team Vestas Wind followed in second and Abu Dhabi took third to cement their overall lead.
It's slack water when Tom Cunliffe comes past Portland Bill. He thinks back to Weymouth ~ seagulls, eagles, the Jailhouse Café and a creative Harbourmaster....

Viele flache Gewässer, alles in 100 Blautönen. Dazu schwimmende Schweine, die Thunderball Grotto, wo einst James Bond gedreht wurde, der Staniel Cay Yacht Club, herrliche Gebiete zum Kitesurfen und vieles mehr. New York Yacht Club, Newport RI. June 12th: Over 170 yachts launched the 161st edition of the Annual Regatta with the traditional Around the Island Race. The winds were light, the racing was good.

Un juvenil de Calderon Tropical se acerca al catamaran y empieza a interactuar con nosotros emitiendo sonidos y movimientos, un animal salvaje en su medio natural que nos intenta transmitir algún mensaje, se le veía alegre de vernos
The first few nights were the hardest...getting used to all the sounds and the rocking of the boat. I can say now though after more than a week of living on the boat...everyone sleeps like a baby. In fact we sleep better on the boat than we ever did in our house!
We have now lived on our sailboat for a little over a week. It has been a really amazing experience. We have met some of the most amazing people at all the different marina's. Everyone seems to love what we are doing with our lives, giving up everything we had to live on a sailboat and travel. We have learned not to be so dependent on electronics and have converted all of our battery charging to solar power and soon will also have a wind turbine. The reason for me filling my peculator outside is that my husband is currently working on the water pipes inside the boat because we have a leak somewhere, so until that pipe is fixed we cannot hook up to shore water just yet...but it is a work in progress. We have also learned to appreciate all the little things so much more and because of this we have really started to love this life and as of now, we are not sure if we would ever want to go back to living on the mainland as everyone else does.
Here goes another attempt at creating a scarf jig using a router this time.
I finally cut a successful scarf joint using my new router jig

It was a lovely day but with not a lot of wind. Hannah joined our friend Tony on his V3000 trapeze dinghy, and Izzy and Daddy filmed the action from Granddads boat. Reasonable turn out of competitors given the weather and I think we caught most people on camera at some point or another.
The Race to Alaska is a no-engine event, yet you are not allowed to sail in Victoria harbour, so every entrant had to use human power. On Team "Golden Oldies", a Crowther 38 catamaran, we had two sliding seats, one on each transom scoop. The 24ft beam meant the oars would not touch when all 4 were used. We could row at 3.2 knots at full speed, but 2.5 was more comfortable. We won the first leg, you can see Team "Freeburd" behind us. The start from Victoria was Le Mans style with all crews on shore and running down to their boats and rowing away. Despite the differences in type and size all boats seemed to row at around 3 knots, we overtook the Mirror 16. We rowed for over 6 miles non stop before the wind got up and we could sail. Our main halyard broke shortly after sailing through Seymour Narrows. That was the end of the race for us so we turned round and sailed back under headsails alone to Saturna Island, over 120 miles to the south. Off Comox we met Team Freeburd heading north If only the race itself had been as fast (over 15 knots) dry and fun! With no engine or mainsail we could not get into marinas unaided, so were towed the last couple of miles Richard Woods of Woods Designs www.sailingcatamarans.com
