Navigation am Segelboot auf Langfahrt: Plotter, iPad, Handy, Papierkarten — wie das zusammenspielt. Ein Freund fragte mich, ob er einen zweiten Plotter braucht. Meine Antwort hat ihn überrascht. Ich hab auf der La Licorne kein teures Cockpit-Setup — und trotzdem navigiere ich zuverlässig auf Langfahrt. Mein Raymarine C120 ist aus den 90ern, kein NMEA, alte Karten. Aber er macht Radar und er funktioniert immer. Das eigentliche Herzstück ist ein uraltes gebrauchtes iPad der sechsten Generation mit Navionics und AIS überlagert. Diese Kombination — aktuelle Seekarte plus AIS — ist für mich auf See das Entscheidende. Dazu kommt mein Handy mit Navily, Windy, Ankeralarm und dem elektronischen Logbuch. Und Papierkarten, die ich manchmal fast vergesse, obwohl sie vorgeschrieben sind und besonders an der Atlantikküste oder im Englischen Kanal wirklich gerettet haben. Ganz am Ende gibt es noch einen Tipp, den ich fast vergessen hätte: wie du deine gesamte Navigation mit einem Backofen vor Blitzeinschlag schützt. This week we’re giving you a full walkthrough of our homebuilt catamaran to show just how much progress has happened lately. When you work on a project every single day, it’s hard to notice the small changes — but once we started walking through each space, even we were surprised by how far things have come. Along the way, we’ll show some of the projects we completed over the winter that never made it into an episode, including repainting all of the cabinets (because apparently I couldn’t leave them alone 😅), updates to the engine rooms, and some of the systems now being prepared for hoses, pumps, and plumbing. We also talk about a few areas currently on hold while we wait for materials and supplies to arrive. Before the walkthrough, I start tackling one of the biggest exterior jobs yet: prepping the cabin top for paint. Since we decided to move away from gelcoat and paint the boat instead, we now need to sand away the glossy surface and identify any low spots before primer can begin. Thankfully, the first test sections went much better than expected. After using a guide coat to check fairness, we found far fewer low spots than we were bracing ourselves for — which hopefully means a lot less sanding when we move on to the hull sides next spring. Outer Reef are known for building long-range cruising yachts, often aimed at owners who want to spend serious time on board, travel extensively, and in many cases operate the yacht themselves. So in this video I look at their range, their recent merger with Lynx Yachts in The Netherlands, and two of their most popular models: the Outer Reef 650 and the Outer Reef 700/720 Motoryacht. We look at the layouts, the unusually large galleys, the owner’s accommodation, crew space, fuel capacity, range, construction, and the type of owner these yachts appear to be built for. While flipping through some old photo CDs I made years ago, I realized there were memories worth preserving—and sharing. Back when Toni and I were working our way through college, we didn’t have two nickels to rub together. Our chariot was a 1962 VW Bug with a 6 volt electrical system, a 25 horsepower engine, and absolutely no heat. We drove it back and forth to class, bundled in blankets, scraping frost from the inside of the windshield, and listening to that little air cooled engine rattle its way through the day. When I started working nights, we “upgraded” to a 1972 Super Beetle with a roaring 60 horsepower. Compared to the old Bug, it felt like a Ferrari. Volkswagens were cheap to run, easy to fix, and somehow full of personality. Once we graduated and landed our first real jobs, we moved on to more practical vehicles—but the Beetle never stopped calling to us. The candle melted onto the one inch dash we used as a defroster, the blankets we wrapped ourselves in for warmth, the rat a tat tat of the air-cooled engine… all of it softened into fond memories, little moments in time. So when a 1979 VW Convertible came up for sale in 1997—triple black, all original, fuel injected—we jumped at it. That car became our putt putt machine for local adventures, evening drives, picnics, and exploring back roads. There’s nothing quite like a Beetle convertible with the top down, the stereo playing, and the world rolling by at its own pace. Another moment in time, captured and kept.
