After discovering that Salloo’s windlass was seized, we made the decision to pivot our plans. Originally, we intended to move Salloo 400 nautical miles north from the Gold Coast to Gladstone, where we planned to complete the refit. Instead, we decided to bring our sailing catamaran, SV Emma James, 400 nautical miles south from Gladstone to the Gold Coast, and now we are headed back to Gladstone to bring the sailboat south to the Gold Coast. Before we leave Salloo, we spend some time measuring the accommodation level and starting to work out the new interior layout. The current layout has five cabins, three showers and two toilets. Our plan is to transform this into three larger cabins, two showers, two toilets, a dedicated office and laundry, and plenty of storage, including a much larger master cabin and space for guests, making the space usable for us. Join me aboard the Y7, a luxury carbon sailing yacht, for a detailed review from a naval architect’s perspective. From the guest cabins to the engine room, I explain what works well and what I would change before placing an order. The Y7 combines a sailing-focused carbon construction with a carefully finished interior. In this full yacht tour, we look at what that means for everyday life aboard, including circulation, storage, equipment access and the practical details that deserve attention when choosing a boat. We begin at the stern, with the swim platform and tender garage. The hatch arrangement and lack of a crane raise questions about handling the tender and its outboard. I explain how I would redesign the opening to preserve a working surface and allow for a removable davit. It is one of the areas I would discuss before ordering this yacht. Below deck, we explore the salon, both guest cabins and the owner’s suite. There is plenty of natural light, beautifully finished woodwork and careful detailing in the bathrooms. The carbon mast passes through the salon, while the owner’s cabin includes an unexpected walk-in closet. We also examine features that can be easy to overlook during a quick viewing. Protruding toggle switches deserve consideration on a boat that sails heeled, and the guest showers feel small for a yacht of this level. Throughout the tour, I look at how the spaces might work when the boat is moving, as well as how they look alongside. The galley brings up another set of decisions. It has a gimballed oven and induction cooktop, together with plenty of storage, but I would want an extractor hood and a more practical sink arrangement. The configurable interior gives an owner the opportunity to address these details around their own sailing habits. Next, we visit the separate crew area and engine room. We look at the 150 hp Yanmar, the generator and the access available for maintenance. There is useful headroom, although working around the machinery will require some thought. The compact crew accommodation is also worth examining closely if permanent crew will be part of the boat’s operation. Back on deck, we explore the twin helm stations, winches and sail controls. The fairly centralized handling arrangement and self-tacking jib are intended to make sailing with two people easier. We finish by looking at the clear side decks, flush hatches and equipment at the bow. This Y7 review is for sailors, prospective owners and anyone who enjoys understanding the thinking behind a yacht’s layout. I highlight the craftsmanship and solutions I appreciate, while explaining the changes I would consider for a particular way of using the boat. Until now. During a visit on board ADAMAS V, David was so impressed by the machinery spaces that he decided to do something different. Rather than another tour of the guest accommodation, decks and amenities, this time he wanted to understand what goes on behind the scenes. Following an extensive refit in 2023, ADAMAS V has an engine room that immediately caught David's attention. Accompanied by Johnny, he takes a detailed look at the yacht's original engines, which have undergone major overhauls, and the remarkable network of colour-coded pipes that makes it possible to identify the different systems throughout the vessel. The conversation takes them through the yacht's nine fuel tanks, explaining why fuel is transferred between them to maintain stability and trim, and how purification systems remove water and impurities before diesel reaches the engines. They also explore the freshwater production and distribution systems, bilge water separation and sewage treatment, including the procedures designed to prevent pollution. There are plenty of surprises along the way, from the compressed-air systems used to start the engines to the engineering control room, where the yacht can be controlled independently of the bridge. David also discovers the separate generator room, designed to reduce noise and vibration, and learns about the extensive ventilation and air conditioning upgrades completed during the refit. For David, who has spent years visiting engine rooms without always knowing exactly what he was looking at, this is an opportunity to ask the questions that many viewers might have themselves. And Johnny's explanations offer a fascinating insight into the engineering and daily operation of a large superyacht. Introducing KAFOFO, a 2009 Royal Cape Majestic 530 sailing catamaran built by Royal Cape Catamarans in South Africa. At 53 feet, she combines the volume and living space expected of a large cruising catamaran with an unusually versatile five-stateroom, five-head interior, generous bridge-deck living spaces, substantial onboard systems, and a layout designed to accommodate owners and guests without sacrificing common living areas. KAFOFO stands apart most clearly in the amount of accommodation carried within her two hulls. The port hull incorporates the owner’s forward accommodations and dedicated office area along with an additional aft guest stateroom, while the starboard hull provides three additional guest staterooms. Five freshwater-flush heads serve the accommodations, creating a level of privacy and flexibility more commonly associated with considerably larger yachts. Above, the main saloon, galley, and covered cockpit form the social center of the vessel. Large windows bring natural light into the bridge-deck interior, while the cockpit provides a protected outdoor gathering area with dedicated refrigeration, dining space, and direct access to the transoms and surrounding decks. Her cruising systems are equally notable. Twin Volvo D2-75F diesels provide auxiliary propulsion, while a substantial electrical package incorporates lithium battery storage, a 10 kW Victron inverter/charger, solar generation, wind generation, and a 20 kW Northern Lights generator. Powered by twin 4,175hp MTU engines, she reaches a top speed of 20 knots, with a reported range of 5,200 nautical miles at 15 knots. During the walkthrough, David explores the yacht's impressive outdoor spaces, including a sun deck with Jacuzzi, a boat deck with concealed cranes for launching tenders and vehicles, and the main-deck owner's suite, which feels more like a private apartment. He also discovers the redesigned entertaining areas, comfortable guest accommodation and unusually generous crew facilities, with space for 15 crew members and six additional staff. A major refit in 2023 brought extensive improvements to the machinery, systems and interiors.
