Valerie und ich, zwei Katzen und ein Hund. sind auf unserem Boot angekommen. Alleine an Bord. Es ist Frühling in Schweden, doch es fühlt sich wie Winter an: kalt, feucht und still. Genau hier beginnt unser Leben auf dem Segelboot. Der neue Bootsalltag startet ruhig. Wir putzen, räumen um und auf. Die Sonne scheint, wir erledigen die ersten Wege an Land. Über die Fähre geht es zum Waschsalon, Heizdecken und Lebensmittel kaufen. Während die Wäsche in fremden Maschinen läuft, wächst unser Einkaufskorb und mit ihm das Gefühl, wirklich angekommen zu sein. Zurück an Bord reißt mich plötzlich ein lauter Alarm auf dem Boot aus der Stille. Unsicherheit, Sorge um die Tiere. Ich betrete das Segelboot, suche panisch nach den Katzen und finde nur eine. Zum Glück kommt Hilfe. Tomas, der uns das Boot verkauft hat, ist sofort da. Schnell wird klar: ein Bilgenalarm. Erleichterung. Wieder einmal zeigt sich, wie unvorhersehbar und lehrreich das Leben an Bord ist. Trotz Kälte, Feuchtigkeit und Eiszapfen ist für uns klar: Ein Hotel oder Airbnb kommt nicht infrage. Das Bootsleben in Schweden fordert uns und schenkt uns gleichzeitig etwas ganz Besonderes. Wir essen zusammen, spazieren stundenlang, entdecken die Umgebung und genießen die gemeinsame Zeit. Nach vier Tagen heißt es Abschied nehmen. Als Marzena Schweden verlässt, wird es nicht mehr dunkel. Das Licht bleibt. Und mit ihm eine wundervolle Erinnerung. Tomas, der Vorbesitzer unseres Bootes stand immer mit Rat und Tat in dieser Anfangszeit bereit. Das er neben seiner Arbeit auch noch freiwillig viele Schichten beim schwedischen Seenotrettungsdienst absolviert, hat uns sehr beeindruckt. Das uns beides in einem gelang, war auch ein bisschen Zufall. Opern Gala am Sylvester Abend. Das klingt nicht nur teuer, das ist mit 900 AU$ pro Person absurd teuer. Aber alles ist zwischen Weihnachten und Neujahr unverschämt teuer in Sydney. Freunde machen nur eine Bootstour und beobachten dann das Feuerwerk außerhalb der restricted area – das ist nahezu genauso teuer. Zum Ausgleich haben wir ein gebuchtes Essen sowie ein Bed and Breakfast gekündigt und sind mit unserem Campervan in die Nähe der Endstation der S-Bahnlinie T1 nach Richmond gezogen. Der Stellplatz des Richmond Club kostet 10 AU$, der auf Percy`s Place 65 AU$ pro Nacht. Von hier nehmen wir den Zug in die Stadt. Das dauert 2 h pro Richtung also 16 h in den vier Tagen, die wir hier sind. Das ist unerträglich – am Neujahrsmorgen wird es sogar schon wieder hell als wir erschöpft in unsere Koje fallen. Plötzlich beschleunigte sich mein Leben erheblich, ich verkaufte mein Haus, löste den Hausrat auf und begann Berge an Schiffsausrüstung anzuschaffen. „Leinen los!“ war für Anfang März 2021geplant – und so kam es auch, trotz Corona. Brigitta war natürlich vollkommen überrascht, obwohl eine Weltumsegelung wesentlich besser in Ihr berufliches Leben passte als in meins. In den folgenden 6 Monaten hat Brigitta aber eine erstaunliche Entwicklung hinter sich gebracht und freut sich über unser großes Abenteuer genau wie ich. Insgesamt sind wir aktuell 4 ½ Jahre unterwegs. Ein Abenteuer folgt dem nächsten und wir genießen jeden Tag aufs Neue. Auf der Suche nach Freiheit und Unabhängigkeit, Abenteuerlust und Naturverbundenheit segeln wir - Brigitta und Hannes - gemeinsam um die Welt. ► On the second-hand market for boats under 40 feet, the Lagoon 380 has become the must-have. Admittedly, this bestseller, which saw more than 900 examples built, has aged pretty well and offers remarkable comfort for its size... but for budgets just over €100,000, there are other models to consider, such as the Athena 38 by Fountaine Pajot, which offers two advantages: it is more affordable than the Lagoon and is faster under sail! ► Launched at the La Rochelle boat show in September 1994, the Athena 38 was positioned between the Tobago 35 and the Venezia 42. All the models in this second generation, designed by Joubert/Nivelt, are characterized by their blunt bows, very rounded shapes on the inside (the miracle that polyester GRP must have been for naval architects long familiar with wood, steel, aluminum, and chined bilges!) and finally the overhanging coachroof cap, which is the one feature that would be retained and still remains today. ► Lightweight and well-canvased, the Athena 38 is lively and fun to sail from the single helm station – positioned on the aft face of the coachroof, on the starboard side. Obviously, the relatively short length and skeg keels reduced do it no favors when close-hauled in bigger seas, but in all other conditions, this little catamaran will surprise more than one helmsman with its performance - which can be boosted by decent sails and the installation of folding propellers. ► The model Graham presents to us is from 2001 and is a three-cabin version - the entire starboard hull is dedicated to the owner. The nacelle offers a rounded saloon that can easily accommodate six people, a chart table/desk, and a U-shaped galley. Logically, there is only one bathroom per hull. On the starboard side, Graham has a fully equipped workshop. Welcome to our latest #CruisingConversation with Nathan and Lindsey from The 71 Percent! The adventures of The 71 Percent have already captured headlines as they have taken command of a new Selene 49 down under. In 2026 they are one of the biggest trawler stories as their growing audience of YouTube subscribers are following their trip across the Pacific from Australia to North America. This video was filmed aboard a freshly completed Selene 51 during the Selene Grand Opening celebration in early December 2025. The Jet Tern Marine yard in Zhuhai, China was in red carpet – VIP – celebration mode - and it was an amazing couple of days for Howard Chen and all of the team at Selene. Jeff was able to catch up with Nathan and Lindsay at the yard – they had flown up from Australia where they were in the middle of preparations for their Pacific crossing. They soaked up the highlights and spoke to the dealers from all over the world to share some about their trip. None of this would be possible without the collaboration between Selene Australia and Selene Americas – there is a positive vibe throughout the dealer network that is incredibly productive. Nathan and Lindsey had a blast seeing the yard, inspecting boats in construction, meeting the workers and spending time with other Selene owners. For them it was fun to enjoy a quick break before getting back to business for final tasks before taking off on their Selene adventure. It’s kind of hard to introduce people who everybody already knows, but there are many people who are always interested and can’t get enough of Nathan and Lindsey. We were able to have a fun discussion on board to review their planning, preparation and giddiness of outfitting a serious trawler for the type of deep water travel it is designed for. A lot more goes into this type of commitment – weather windows, engine room checks, standing watch, navigation and routing, tools, spare parts, organizing provisions, cooking, when and whether to have crew, living a full life underway…it’s not just get-the-camera-out-and-film. Looking back at this short pilothouse discussion, I have to admit I’m even more impressed. Nathan and Lindsey are approachable, friendly, kind, genuine, authentic and just great, fun people with a lot of energy that comes through loud and clear in their YouTube and Instagram, which they spend hours producing. And is sure doesn’t hurt that they are well-spoken, enthusiastic and photogenic. Hope you enjoy this episode.
