I’ve got a free sailboat ! A Colvic sailor 26 called Puffin. But wait doesn’t the saying go “there’s no such thing as a free sailboat”. Well that certainly is true. In this video I give you a tour of the boat and give you an idea of what to expect. Nothing in life is free and it’s true in this respect. It’s an amazing sea going boat and I’m already enjoying the journey. Eventually it will be sailed and called home. Join me in the long process of restoring and rebuilding this lovely boat, this is definitely a DIY project as I have never done anything like this before. I will be teaching myself all the boat building skills I can but will not be building a run of a mill sailboat. Having no engine, I have decided to go the electric motor route. I will also be looking into onboard plastic recycling and 3d printing using that plastic. As well as other aspects and inventions to improve self- sufficiency onboard. As well as being a beginner at boat building I am also a beginner at Youtube Vlog videos. In this video we are doing a quick tour of our friends narrowboat. It's really different to ours as it's very traditional. Hope you enjoy! We’re Stephen and Kayleigh an English/ Scottish couple and along with our two dogs Hugo and Coco we will full time on board our 37ft narrowboat Grayswood. After living nearly two years in our self-converted campervan we decided we needed more space. So, as a compromise (Ste wanted a boat, I was happy in the van) we decided we would purchase a boat after spending some time on our friend’s narrowboat. Grayswood was conveniently located less that 5 minutes from my work and was found kind of by accident. I was visiting a friend who was staying in Aston Marina and whilst we were out walking the dogs, I seen the advert for Grayswood. I said to my friend “that looks a nice boat” and as I said it the marina manager appeared and asked if we would like a look inside. Naturally we did. After looking inside, the boat I texted Ste and told him I’d found us a boat. We made an offer after going back for a second viewing, after some negotiations within a week she was ours pending a survey. She was hauled out the following week and the survey went well. We kept her out on the hard standing for a further six weeks whilst we renovated the insides including fitting a new kitchen and bathroom. With the COVID crisis really impacting the tourism season here, it is inevitable that more and more yachts are being put up for sale. Along with this, people looking to buy boats during this time is also on the increase. And all the travel restrictions around right now are making it super hard for these two parties to make connections and make sales. So it seems we're in a great place to help! What we have found is that, having chartered yachts here in Croatia now for over 4 years, we have a great vantage point. The good news is, our boat has been released from lock-down, and we are now able to cruise full time on the coast of England. The bad news is, for all the plans and back-up plans we've been making for the year, we can't seem to achieve any of them. What we had WANTED to happen for ourselves in 2020 is that we'd spend the spring and early summer enjoying England, and then move ourselves down to Spain or Portugal where we would list her for sale, and hopefully and American or Canadian buyer would scoop her up, and we'd be on our merry way back to the US to begin our catamaran build. But as it stands, as of today, Americans and Canadians can not get into the UK to see the boat, without having to go through a 2 week quarantine period first. Our next thought was, "Ok, we'll sail her down to Spain/Portugal, where they'll be able to view the boat there". But...currently, residents of the US are not allowed into the EU. Which means that potential buyers can not get in there, and neither can we. The last option is to sail Elements to the US to sell her, but now we're entering hurricane season, that can't be done until Nov/Dec. Long after our UK visa has run out. So many unexpected issues, but we're trying to make the best of it all! And considering the beautiful cruising grounds we have at our fingertips at the moment, that isn't too hard. The most famous Bestevaer -besides Gerry Dykstra's own perhaps- is for sale! 'Tranquilo' is an aluminium Bestevaer 56, built in 2007 at our yard in Makkum. The owner sailed her single handed twice around the world and twice through the Northwest Passage. Now that he is sailing on his new KMY built custom expedition yacht, it's time to sell Tranquilo. The yacht has a classic appearance from the outside, but the interior is modern and contemporary. Her lift keel ensures entrance into smaller bays and harbours. Thanks to her water ballast and carbon rig her sailing performance is excellent with ca 180-200nM per day on average.
