The 54DS, with its swoopy cat-eye ports and immense interior, proved to be a very popular model, with over 400 hulls built. When it came time to refresh the design, the big-in-all-respects Jeanneau 57 came on the scene in 2010. Now the smaller but very similar 53-foot sister, designed by Phillipe Briand, has been launched -- to high expectations. Successful designs have a way of morphing into their future selves, and with the continuous improvement of the Beneteau/Jeanneau production building techniques, these new boats are not only stylish bluewater sailing machines, they are also well built and affordable. The 53 and 57 share much of their interior design and furniture, and Jeanneau leveraged their economies of scale across models to reduce material, labor, and design costs. This allows them to build highly customizable boats on a more affordable production basis. With the 53 and 57 (they even share a glossy high-end brochure), Jeanneau has formed a Jeanneau Yachts line of premium boats over 50 feet. Yes, they’re production boats, but in the hands of pro French builders, “production” has taken on a whole new meaning in the past decade. Key Characteristics The 53 looks good, sails fast, and offers a choice of interiors that rivals most custom boatbuilders. The construction quality places these boats into the serious bluewater cruiser realm. The 53 is built in a two-part mold with a fiberglass structural grid tabbed to the hull and a reinforcing aluminum grid below the saloon sole for additional strength and stiffness. A full-length liner is then placed in the hull and is topped by a balsa-cored deck. Below the waterline is a cast iron keel with a bulb, available with a draft of 7’5” or 5’10” for the shoal version. She displaces 33,000 pounds and sports a beam of 15’7”, which makes her moderately light and not too beamy – read “fast.” The 19/20ths fractional rig by Z-Spar is deck-stepped, with two sets of swept-back spreaders. In-mast furling or a fully battened traditional mainsail are offered. The total standard sail area is 1,420 square feet with a 135-percent genoa. The mast is just over 70 feet, which might be a challenge with some fixed bridges along the East Coast. Unlike the high, bulbous look of the 54, the 53 has a low, more angular deck that is nearly flush. So it’s easy to get around and affords good visibility forward, while still providing ample headroom below. And there’s still plenty of light in the saloon via hull ports and the three large overhead hatches. headsail. Two more winches and a set of rope clutches on the cabintop manage the rest of the lines, all of which are led aft. The molded-in sheet and halyard boxes situated between the winches and clutches will keep the cockpit uncluttered. A dedicated compartment aft allows the liferaft to be launched without leaving the cockpit. The biggest difference between the 53 and 57 here is that there is no dinghy garage in the transom; the 57 has one that will hold a full-sized dinghy tucked below the deck sideways. Accommodations The Jeanneau 53 offers layouts of three to six cabins. The master suite, with a centerline queen, is available forward or aft, but large families can add two cabins on either end for whatever combination fits best. A crew cabin with deck access may be added in the bow, but I think this space will be used most often for storage. The saloon and galley stay the same in all the designs, and the full-sized, forward-facing nav station is to starboard in all but one configuration, where it and a head are replaced by a cabin with over-and-under bunks. The L-shaped galley to port is well-appointed, with lots of countertop space, a microwave, and a top- and side-loading reefer/freezer. Two or four heads are available depending on the layout option. The straight settee to port in the saloon has a fold-down back/arm rest that forms a small game or cocktail table with hidden wine glass storage behind. A U-shaped dinette to starboard will seat eight when using the two additional chairs inboard. The interior uses Alpi teak veneer, stainless handholds, intimate LED lighting, and plenty of leather accents. It’s just as sleek in design as the exterior, with lots of clean lines and minimal décor.

** NOW SOLD ** Lying in the Gold Coast, in a near new condition, ‘Therapy III’ is a 2018 Lagoon 450S exclusively listed for sale with team YOTI Queensland. This four-cabin Lagoon 450 Sportop was sold in 2018 by The Multi Hull Group to her only owner. The vessel is fully optioned with 11kva Generator, Air conditioning, Watermaker, washing machine, solar panels, electric winches, full B and G instrumentation and plotters and more. Her interior is a beautiful matt Alpi Walnut. Her saloon is airy and light, with the trademark excellent all-round visibility that Lagoons are known for. A comfortable and large L shaped settee with table is to starboard, the navigation station with remote joystick for indoor steering to port. The U-shaped galley with Corian tops has lots of counter space and due to the revised orientation, easier access to the cockpit. All her cabins are ensuite, have large hull windows and overhead hatches, to ensure ventilation and feeling of light and space. The aft cabins feature island berths with plenty of storage, the forward berths are slightly angled to enable a partial entry from the side too. Furthermore, the saloon table can be lowered to form an additional double berth. The Sportop version of the 450 has an offset, safe helm position, from where you operate all sails. It was designed to reduce separation of crew and helmsman. Visibility from the helm is great with all the electric primary, manoeuvring and mainsheet winches all within reach. At the helm is B & G touchscreen GPS with AIS receiver. The sail areas are the same as the Flybridge version. However, the lower mast and boom reduces pitching and makes the boom easier to access. For downwind performance, she also comes with two North Gennakers: A G- Zero on a furler and a G2 in a sock. The optional composite steering Bimini is fitted with all-round clears, as is the entire cockpit, for additional protection from the elements. ‘Therapy III’ is powered by twin 57hp Yanmar diesel engines with only a little over 1200 hours. The Highfield CL360 RIB with a 20Hp 4 stroke Yamaha outboard is stored on large davits with a dedicated electric- manual winch for ease of retrieval. This four-cabin Lagoon 450 has been beautifully looked after. She has just been antifouled, hull and cabin top polished, engines, saildrives and genset serviced. This catamaran is an absolute turnkey and fully optioned blue water cruising catamaran, available now and awaiting her next adventure. Built by the largest manufacturer of production yachts globally, the Oceanis 51.1’s key design motivators were to craft a smart, comfortable and fast cruising yacht – equally at home heading for a simple day sail or crossing oceans. Loseca is a supurb example with a genuinely comprehensive inventory with a walk on and sail away package. The yacht is owned by an experienced couple whose goal was to set the boat up to have all modern cruising comforts while maintaining the yachts ease and simplicity. Impressively Loseca’s huge list of upgrades cover both critical bases; style and function. This is a stunning looking yacht. The cockpit protection built by Shane Beashel with the dodger, bimini and side and rear covers are award winning. There is a full suite of cockpit cushions including the retreat under the large dodger. The upgraded twin black Carbonautica steering wheels are a perfect match. All lines lead aft to the four large electric Harken winches which can be controlled by the helms. The large boarding platform is push button operated. Loseca’s interior is seriously impressive. The Oak cabinetry, the striped floor and the Ultraleather upholstery were all significant upgrades. This is apartment living on the water in the best possible way while still boasting solid sea-going features like the ‘U’ shaped galley, strong hand holds, a dedicated nav station and control centre which could also make for a handy office space. Lounging and dining space is abundant and the saloon table extends (another upgrade). There are three fridges plus a freezer. A domestic size Siemens washer / dryer is neatly stowed and easily accessed. The galley includes a dishwasher, coffee machine, microwave, and fresh and salt water foot pump. Both toilets are quiet flush and plumbed to fresh water. The utility space under the rear of the cockpit houses the 9KVA generator and Stella 160L p/hr water maker. This is an easy to access area with additional space for storage. There is a large sail locker forward in the bow. The mainsail is furling as is the self-tacking headsail plus included is a furling asymmetric spinnaker or MPS by Hoods (on the upgraded bow sprit). Genoa tracks were also factory installed as an upgrade to offer the ultimate flexible sail plan. The Yanmar engine was upgraded to the 110Hp (from 80Hp). Loseca’s condition is striking and her huge level of upgrades will suit all sailing appetites. After we become essentially homeless after selling our boat, we still have one week left in England before our flights back to the US. We use that time to visit a few friends along the way, and take in all the British charm we can. In the town of Calstock, we walk the Cotehele Estate, which has been around since the mid 15th Century, and has one of the most untouched Tudor homes in all of England. Soon though, it was time to head to London, where we'd be staying with our friends on SV Polaris, whom we'd meet while sailing the Isles of Scilly. They welcomed us into their home for the next few days, showing us the local sights, and even getting me on the water one more time. Their son, Constantin, does weekly races on the River Thames, and it was decided that this week, I would join him. Having never sailed such a small boat before, I was terrified I would capsize us at some point in the race. But it turns out Constantin is a great teacher, and we even took fifth place! Mit viel Freude pflege ich seit 2004 Patenschaften zu Kindern in Vietnam und Nepal. Lockere Briefwechsel informieren mich über die Fortschritte der Kinder, deren Familien und Gemeinden und geben mir die Möglichkeit über unser Leben in Deutschland zu berichten, von meiner Familie und meinen Freunden. Einige der Kinder sind tatsächlich während der Patenschaft volljährig geworden oder aus dem Programmgebiet verzogen, sodass die Patenschaft beendet aber natürlich sofort durch eine neue ersetzt wurde. Die Krönung dieser Kontakte waren 2010 meine Besuche bei damals zwei Patenkindern in Vietnam und 2019 in Nepal. 2010 mit meiner damals 12-jährigen Tochter Carolin – ein Tür- und Herzensöffner wie man ihn sich nicht besser wünschen kann. Beide Besuche waren unvergessliche Erlebnisse in meinem Leben und sind sicherlich mit Motivation erneut auf Reisen zu gehen – diesmal auf dem Wasser. In Zusammenarbeit mit der Zentrale von Plan in Hamburg werden wir mit unserem Katamaran Programmländer besuchen und die Arbeit vor Ort medial aufarbeiten. Viele der Programmländer liegen an der s.g. Barfussroute, werden aus Sicherheitsgründen von Weltumseglern aber in der Regel nicht besucht. Genau das wollen wir bewusst anders machen und dem Privileg solch einer Segelreise ein bisschen einen Sinn geben. Seit vielen Jahren war eine Weltumsegelung mein (Hannes) großer Traum, den ich berufsbedingt zum Renteneintrittsalter verwirklichen wollte. Manchmal kommt das Leben aber anders als man plant. Im Frühjahr diesen Jahres erhielt ich die Diagnose Morbus Parkinson. Plötzlich beschleunigte sich mein Leben erheblich, ich verkaufte mein Haus, löste den Hausrat auf und begann Berge an Schiffsausrüstung anzuschaffen. „Leinen los!“ ist für den 8. März geplant – allerdings haben wir Corona vorher nicht gefragt. Brigitta war natürlich erst einmal vollkommen überrascht, obwohl eine Weltumsegelung wesentlich besser in Ihr berufliches Leben als Vorruheständlerin passte als in meins. In den letzten 6 Monaten hat Sie aber eine erstaunliche Entwicklung hinter sich gebracht und freut sich auf unser großes Abenteuer genau wie ich. Plan International ist ein internationales Kinderhilfswerk. Auf unserer Reise wollen wir nicht nur in Traumbuchten chillen sondern Programmländer von Plan besuchen und die dortige Arbeit dokumentieren. Very light for its size with a displacement of 4,000 lb (1,814 kg), it has a 7/8 fractional sloop rig with aluminum spars, a raked stem, a reverse transom, an internally mounted spade-type rudder controlled by a tiller and a fixed fin keel or lifting keel with a bulb weight. It displaces 4,000 lb (1,814 kg) and carries 1,900 lb (862 kg) of lead ballast.[1][3][4] The lifting keel version of the design uses a "bolt-down" style of keel, It has a draft of 5.50 ft (1.68 m) with the lifting keel extended and 1.83 ft (0.56 m) with it retracted, allowing ground transportation on a trailer. It has a very narrow beam of 8.00 ft (2.44 m) to meet the legal requirements for highway trailer widths. It mast is hinged at the mast step and the spinnaker pole is used to raise the mast for quick launching with a small crew.[1][3] The boat is normally fitted with a small outboard motor for docking and maneuvering. The outboard is fitted into a stern well, that allows the motor to be swung up and a hatch closed to fair the opening.[1][3] The galley is limited to a dish locker, an icebox under the companionway steps and provisions for an optional alcohol-fired stove. The fresh water tank has a capacity of 5 U.S. gallons (19 L; 4.2 imp gal). There is a sink fed by pumped water, vanity and space for a portable-type head to be installed. Sleeping accommodations are provided for five people on a bow "V"-berth, two under-cockpit single berths and one main cabin settee berth.[3] There are six port fixed lights in a tapered shape and a forward acrylic plastic hatch for ventilation.[3] The cockpit has two sheet winches and all lines, including the halyards, lead to the cockpit. A 838 sq ft (77.9 m2) spinnaker can be used for downwind sailing. The genoa employs a headfoil (a headsail airfoil-shaped reinforcement) and a concealed backstay adjuster. The mainsheet and the boom vang both have 4:1 mechanical advantages. There is a topping lift and an internal outhaul line.[3] The design has a Portsmouth Yardstick racing average handicap of 73.0 and a hull speed of 7.44 kn (14 km/h).[3][4]
