Recently I seem to have been reviewing Mangusta yachts ALOT! When I recorded this video I had already published a video of the Mangusta 165 "Da Vinci" that is available for charter and a video about another 165 "Serenity" that is available for sale. Little did I know that I was about to film yet another one about a Mangusta 108' called "Neoprene" - also available for sale. All of these videos have received tremendous amounts of views, which tells me that the yachting public is very much in love with this brand. So in this video I am delighted to update you on what is happening NOW at Marvelous Mangusta!

Originally built a little over ten years ago, the previous owner of this massive custom sailboat spent over a million dollars on the build. Unfortunately, he passed away before he could sail the boat, and the current owner purchased it from the estate. The boat is constructed of exterior quality plywood, sealed with epooxy and sheathed in glass fibre and epoxy. One of the great beauties of these boats is that the ballast keel is fitted towards the end of the build, enabling the boat to be kept lower in the shed for most of the construction time. Jeff Merrill has known Bill Kimley for several years and the two agreed to get together in May at the 2019 Pacific Sail and Power Boat Show in Richmond, CA to record a #CruisingConversation. Bill was in town to promote the Coot 38 listed for sale by Oceanic Yacht Sales which turned out to be an ideal location for filming this video. As you will see and learn, Bill has a very strong connection to the trawler market preceding and evolving into the creation of Seahorse Marine in 1981. Bill is best known as the builder of Diesel Duck trawlers and Seahorse trawlers out of his shipyards in Zhuhai (mainland) China. Seahorse Marine was the first production boat builder to move from Taiwan to China. When you wind Bill up, he can talk for hours and we’re sure we could have easily diverted into more tangents on some of the other projects he has been involved with, but this is a long enough interview as is. Bill is fun to spend time with. If you have met him, you already know (and if not you will soon find out). Bill has a quick wit and you never know what he is going to say next. As a U.C. Berkeley graduate, staff commodore of Richmond Yacht Club and a former yacht broker in the Richmond, CA area Bill is very well connected in the Bay area. Bill has a number of longtime friends who came by to see him including former sailmaker and world famous maritime artist, Jim DeWitt. JMYS has listed and sold several steel Diesel Ducks and Seahorse fiberglass trawlers. We have grown to truly appreciate their capabilities and craftsmanship. Seahorse Marine relies on word of mouth for promotion. We have never seen a Seahorse magazine ad – the marketing cost savings are passed along to the buyers as lower prices when they order a new build. The Diesel Ducks were designed by the late George Buehler. They are exceptional steel trawlers, surprisingly roomy and extremely economical passage makers. The Seahorse 52 started out life as the Mandarin 52 sailboat, a Blaine Seeley design. Bill liked the 52 underbody hull form and tooled up a new deck plan and reconfigured the interior layout to turn this efficient offshore sailboat into a very impressive power trawler. ** NOW SOLD ** Kaivita is an Alaska 43 that is now exclusively for sale with YOTI. Launched in July 2015 in Ballina NSW after a 6-year build at the Ballina boatyard, Kaivita is a custom-built heavy displacement cruising yacht from the drawing table of world-renowned yacht designer, Ted Brewer from Canada. The owner wanted a steel yacht with huge range under power and with a comfortable and easily managed sailing ability. Ted Brewer is very well known for his highly seaworthy designs and the “small ship” style of this vessel is what caught the eye of the owner. Such is the range of this vessel she can go from Sydney to Auckland under power alone. Kaivita has a beautiful light filled interior. She is a two-cabin layout with four bunks in the forward v-berth and a large double berth owners’ cabin aft with a separate office nook. The timbers used throughout are Celery Top Pine trim and planking - all varnished. The floor is Jarrah. All main surfaces are faired, corners curved and painted with 2 pack paint finish. Every piece of plywood used in the fit out was first edge saturated in Epoxy wood preserver and then painted with 2 coats of epoxy before being fitted into the boat. The engine is a keel-cooled marinised Isuzu 4JB1 – naturally aspirated making her easy to source parts, simple to service, reliable and highly fuel efficient. The galley has a high-quality Force 10 stainless steel gas stove and oven fitted. The refrigeration is from Ozefridge and is built in under the bench and runs off 12 volt or 240 volts. She comes with B&G chartplotter, Simrad sounder and log, Simrad wind display, Coursemaster auto-pilot and is fitted with AIS. She resembles her predecessors in speed, agility, and blue-water performance, but her enhancements include an increased hull volume and an innovative interior layout. Like the rest of the Leopard line, the new Leopard 40 includes a light blonde interior with a light, modern and airy feel. However, her interior salon layout is unlike any Leopard before her. Her galley is located forward and the forward-facing settee and table are now located aft. This allows for a panoramic view with large sliding glass doors between the saloon and the aft cockpit.
