This week, I had the rare chance to inspect up close: An iconic Amel Super Maramu (2000) The majestic Amel 54 (2009) And the controversial new Amel 50 (2024) In this video, I show you in detail why Amel was once considered the ultimate bluewater brand, and how the new Amel 50 has abandoned many of the design choices that made Amel yachts legendary. From the single through-hull design, the skeg rudder, and the brilliant bowsprit configuration, to the overall build philosophy — Amel used to set the standard for ocean-going liveaboard sailboats. Sadly, the Amel 50 seems to have traded all of that away, creating what I can only describe as a glorified production cruiser priced at nearly 2 million dollars. This is a full tour of our new to us "old school super yacht". She needs work, but is going to be amazing. What do you all think?! Full electric galley, watermaker, 2 years new electronics including auto pilot, radar and 16 inch chartplotter. Custom dinghy lift where you can leave the engine on (comes with 10.5 rib with almost new 20hp motor), new mainsail and jib, 14 foot by 7 foot custom hard top, dive compressor, two electric toilets with 2x 100 litre blackwater tank, put in 3 new fridge/freezer units, new prop shafts, 8 new underwater lights. We took the bottom down to gel-coat and put 6 layers of barrier coat on before new bottom paint (that was 3 years ago) and we replaced every through hull. We installed two new prop shafts and aquadrives. It has 4 staterooms, one oversized queen bed, one queen bed and to double beds with 4 heads but we are using 2 heads as just storage. You can live remote on this boat for months and months without needing to resupply (3 fridge/freezers, crazy amount of solar and giant lithium batteries etc). It still needs some cosmetic work inside and a couple of things here and there, but could cross oceans right now as is. We love this boat but we are aware we aren't going to get back anywhere near the money we put into her.
