► Two years ago, we discovered the Makai 37 in Croatia, designed by the Italian naval architects Eryd Yacht Design. The Z-shaped aft structure of the coachroof/bimini is unmistakably the signature of this young brand, which has already announced a second model, the Makai 42. In the meantime, Makai has added a touch of sportiness to its 37 in the GTS version, which is fitted with a central foil - a blade between the hulls connecting one to the other. ► Hull #5 includes this feature, and we got the chance to take it out for a test run in Aigio, Greece. It is powered by a pair of V8 Yanmar engines, each producing 370 HP, coupled to Q-SPD (Q-Marine Surface Piercing Drive) drive units with semi-submerged propellers. Fountaine Pajot - A little background: Fountaine Pajot is a French shipyard that has been building boats since 1976, so coming up on about 50 years now. Everything is built in La Rochelle, France, which is one of the biggest boatbuilding hubs in the world. They actually started out building racing dinghies, and then were one of the early companies to really push the cruising catamaran market back in the 80s. Today, they have launched over 4,000 boats worldwide, so it is a very proven brand with a strong global presence. And now this is their brand new 41, replacing the Isla 40 and Astrea 42 Intro: This is the brand new Fountaine Pajot 41. It’s the next evolution of their entry-level sailing catamaran, but it really doesn’t feel “entry-level” at all. They’ve taken what worked on the Astrea 42 and made it more efficient, easier to sail, and more comfortable to live on. Transom / Aft Platforms: • Standard Davits, or optional swim platform. First 40 ft FP to have factory swim platform, Isla 40 did not..... super easy water access, whether you’re swimming, diving, or getting on a dinghy. The big benefit here is usability, no climbing, no hassle, just straight in and out of the water. • Wide steps up into the cockpit make boarding from a dock or dinghy feel natural and safe. Cockpit: • Large aft cockpit with full dining table, this is where everyone ends up. The benefit is that you can comfortably seat a full group without feeling tight. • Seamless indoor-outdoor flow, no step between cockpit and saloon. ► 22 years after Jean-Luc Van Den Heede, the young Breton sailor is welcomed as a hero in Brest: aboard his large trimaran MACSF, he has just broken the record for a round-the-world voyage against the prevailing winds by 28 days. We were able to welcome him in the harbor and share his first moments ashore. ► Last summer, while Guirec Soudée's transatlantic warm-up with the famous YouTuber Inoxtag (see MW203) may have resembled a vacation, it was in fact to prepare both man and his boat for an extreme project – a solo, non-stop circumnavigation of the globe via the three great capes… but not in the usual direction. This time, the approach is to head straight for Cape Horn, followed by Cape Leeuwin and the Cape of Good Hope, which must be left to starboard. ► The Breton sailor thus left his home port of Lorient at the end of December aboard his Ultim MACSF. Two days before Christmas, the solo sailor crossed the starting line of the round-the-world race between the island of Ouessant and the Cape Lizard. Ahead of his bows lies a 22,000-nautical mile direct route against wind and currents. While Guirec is a particularly seasoned and determined sailor - he has already completed a double transatlantic row - the challenge of this round-the-world voyage is colossal. She has been extensively refitted over the last three years and is ideal for someone who truly appreciates the traditional layout of an impeccably designed American-style yacht, featuring a large aft deck and flybridge.
