We’ve upgraded from a van to a sailboat… and believe it or not, our 39-foot sailboat is the biggest home we’ve ever had. After years of living in a Volkswagen and then a Troopy, van life prepared us for the challenges of boat life — small spaces, rationing water, fixing things ourselves, and living off-grid. But on the ocean, freedom looks different. Instead of parking lots and roadside camps, our backyard is coral reefs, jungle-covered islands, and secret anchorages. Surprisingly, sailboat life can even be cheaper than van life — thanks to the wind and free anchorages.
