Saying Goodbye to Newfoundland—and the Man Who Inspired Arabella

After nearly a year in Canadian waters, it's finally time for Arabella to say goodbye to Newfoundland and begin the long journey south. But there is still one adventure left. Steve returns to the Nuddick for a final attempt at establishing a new multi-pitch climbing route, this time with his longtime climbing friend Kate. Between difficult weather, wet rock, and a rapidly closing window, they have to accept that the five-pitch route they've been working toward may have to wait for another trip. Then comes the bittersweet farewell. After months exploring Newfoundland's remote south coast, Arabella leaves Francois and Burgio behind and begins the passage back to Maine. Robin and Akiva head south by land while Steve and Felix sail Arabella toward the United States. But this passage carries more weight than most. Steve's grandfather—the man who helped inspire Arabella and played an enormous role in her construction—passed away just days before they left Newfoundland. With hundreds of miles still between him and home, Steve reflects on growing up beside his grandparents, working alongside his grandfather, and how watching him build with his own hands planted the seed for a project that would eventually become Arabella.
