Jewell Island Maine was exactly that - a jewel of a sailing anchorage. We explored World War bunkers and towers, spent an evening cooking lobsters with the Jewell Island caretaker, hiked the Maine Island trails, found Buoy Beach, Smugglers Cove and Pass, learned how to land your dinghy for 10 ft tides, and threw out our first Maine message in a bottle. From Richmond Island Maine, we travelled directly to Jewell Island in Casco Bay. We anchored safely in the cove, hiked beautiful trails through World War II lookout towers and bunkers, visited Buoy Beach & Smuggler’s Cove. We enjoyed lobster with the Jewell Island caretaker and his brother, and dropped a message in a bottle that later turned up on the mainland in Phippsburg - 60 miles away. Special thanks for information from Charlie the caretaker of Jewell Island for Maine Island Trail Association. mita.org There were (2) 6" mortar shell guns and a bunker between them in WWII. Tall towers with multi-level telescopes to spot U-boats. There were some 400 men on this tiny island looking for U-boats. If they spotted one they would tell the nearby island with the same telescopes and then triangulate the U-boat position and give the coordinates to the guns to fire on them. Apparently no U-boats were ever seen and there is question whether the guns were ever fired, even for practice. We had a fantastic evening with Charlie and his brother Marty on Little Jewell Island. Charlie is the caretaker and does a fabulous job of maintaining the beauty of the island. Charlie asked if we'd like a couple of lobsters and then invited us to the caretaker house for dinner. What a treat. Charlie lives there May to September in the one room house with a rain barrel for water and solar/210ah battery to power lights and his computer. And he has the best view on Little Jewell Island. Thanks Charlie, Marty and Maine Island Trail Association for a special evening.
