Low Level Current & Rudder Removal: How to Save Your Sailing Boat from Disaster - Restoration

Hi Gang! Here is another update on our sailboat #restoration of Reverie, our 1985 Pearson 34 Centerboard #sailboat . This video has a couple of days of work and some interesting takes on: - Removing the Rudder of the Pearson 34 Sailboat - Removing Quadrant - Removing Propeller - Impact of Low Level Current on Underwater Metal - check 2:15 - What serious #damage looks like from low level current on your propeller - check 5:30 We had to use an impact driver and a large bid to remove the bronze screws that hold the rudder show together without damaging the screws. We had to cut the #propeller as it was completely welded to the shaft. We broke two shaft pullers trying to get it out and had no choice but to cut the propeller. It was a good thing to take this route as the propeller had significant damage from underwater low level current. It made the prop really brittle which is really a big safety issue. If I had known it was that bad, I would have not taken the boat out as much as we did. This shows you the important of a #galvanic isolator to protect from galvanic corrosion Rudder came out pretty easily. The quadrant had 6 screws holding the two halves together. We used a breaker bar and the impact driver to remove them and remove the quadrant from the rudder post so we could drop the rudder. Next week, I will be sharing pictures of the rudder inners and we are going to fix the thruhulls on the boat. Stay tune!
