Indonesia - Kawe Island in Raja Ampat

Kawe Island is one of the islands of the Raja Ampat area that is located on the line between the beautiful Wayag Islands and Waigeo Island that houses the Capital city of Waisai. There used to be a mining operation on Kawe, but it was recently abandoned for one reason or another. The operations center, with housing for personnel stood eerily quiet. About a mile or two from the mine on a little island there is a survey marker and a monument right on a little beach marking the exact latitudinal line of 0 degrees, 0 minutes, 0 seconds: The Equator. We did a great scuba dive with our friends Jan and Laura at a place called One Tree Rock (a dramatic rock formation above and below water). Nice fish action and scenery and just as it was time to go up, Laura got to see her first Wobbegong Shark, one of Raja Ampat’s famously weird underwater species! Filmed in October 2014.
