Boat Buyers Guide: What CE Certification Means for Boat Owners | BoatUS

BoatUS Magazine associate editor Lenny Rudow steps aboard the Jeanneau Leader 10.5 and talks to Nick Harvey from Jeanneau America about CE certification and what it means for anyone buying a boat. The Jeanneau Leader 10.5 is built in Europe for both the European and American markets, so it must meet European certification standards, known as CE Certification. So what does this mean for boat buyers and boat owners? Let's start with what it doesn't mean--it doesn't mean that American-built boats are less stringent in their requirements. It means that CE Certified boats have a few additional required items and tests to meet this certification. Among them is a manual bilge pump, large scuppers in the cockpit, and a minimum rise from the lowest point of the cockpit to the cabin entrance. All three things are meant to help keep out water--or get water out of the boat quickly. In addition, all boats with CE Certification must pass a 90-degree test, which is where the boat must make a 90-degree turn at full throttle within a certain distance.
