An Old Fashion Picnic (another Moment in Time)

Toni and I packed an old fashioned picnic into a vintage wicker basket handed down from my mother — the kind that already feels like it holds a century of stories. Wanting the day to be special, we filled it with the finest delicacies and the best ten dollar bottle of champagne money can buy. We dropped the dinghy, the ever faithful Miss Annemarie, and motored toward the secluded curve of Peterson’s Point, determined to avoid any wandering Looky Lous. Once ashore, we spread our picnic blanket, unfolded our beach chairs, and settled into the quiet rhythm of the shoreline. Our feast unfolded in three indulgent acts. First Course — Hors d’oeuvres We began with blinis crowned with the “finest” caviar, Middle Eastern olives stuffed with blue cheese, and caprese bites made from heirloom cherry tomatoes, fresh basil, and mozzarella pearls skewered on toothpicks carved — in legend, if not in fact — from the noble American Chestnut. Second Course — Tea Sandwiches Next came the tea sandwiches: silky liver pâté layered with God’s own pickles and topped with muenster, all resting on pumpernickel. Beside them, crisp cucumber slices lounged atop my signature cream cheese and onion blend, finished with sprigs of fresh dill and tucked neatly between slices of rye. Third Course — Sweets For dessert, we indulged in chocolate French éclairs, coconut crusted macarons, and warm apple strudels — a trio that could tempt even the most disciplined sailor. Each course was accompanied by generous pours of champagne served in the finest crystal flutes we dared to bring aboard.
