33 - Rainbow Reef Diving and Taveuni Waterfalls

In this episode, Koro Vita continues east from Savusavu along the south coast of Vanua Levu. The crew does nice dive along a part of the Rainbow Reef, where they see lots of fish, coral, turtles and sharks. The reef in this particular area looks like it has experienced some mechanical damage from earlier storms, but there's lots of evidence of reef recovery and growth. We sail to the Viani Bay area where we are met by Rob and Michelle of Ventana. Rob joins us for a fast drift dive in the channel. We end up drifting to a spot where the current is RIPPING over the top of the reef and pushing down to backfill the space behind it. We found this strong vertical current vector pushing against us, trying to push us down deeper, so we cancel the dive at that point and return to the surface. Even though we cut the dive short we covered a lot of ground and got to see a lot of the reef! After sailing to an anchorage off Qamea Island, we dinghy over to Taveuni with Rob and Michelle, and do a fantastic hike up the 3 Tavoro waterfalls, with a friendly black dog as our tour guide.
