The Ocean Race Europe’s relentless schedule continues, and while it was a party atmosphere in Nice, for the sailors and shore crews there was hardly any down time between the finish of Leg 3 and the start of Leg 4 on Sunday. The yachts were beautifully lined up along the harbour front for the passers-by and hats off to the logistics team for getting the event village set up so quickly at each of the stopovers. They’ll all now be hot footing it to Genova, Italy for the Leg 4 finish on Wednesday. The previous leg was described as brutal, exhausting, and the most intensive yet, but it’s unlikely this one is being any easier as the sweltering heat continues. A loop around Corsica, through the gap between the island and Sardinia, back up north along the Tuscan coast, and then around a couple of marks to finish on Wednesday 3rd September. We spent a few weeks in January touring SE Asia. At the end of our trip we were in Phuket, Thailand and by coincidence so too were Nigel and Suzanne on their Tamar 31 catamaran, Dark Horse. They are very experienced sailors and have a very nicely built boat. They kindly invited me for a sail and we had a great time sailing round the nearby islands. I found it very different to the Caribbean, which is effectively a lee shore after 2000 miles of trade winds and accompanying swells. Whereas off Phuket there was just a wind blown chop and much lighter winds. It also didn't rain, in fact there were not even the "trade wind" clouds we were used to in the West Indies. The downside was that it got very hot and the rigid bimini was essential, even though it did somewhat reduce the view of the sails. One of the few modifications made on Dark Horse. We think there are a lot of multihulls in the UK, but anchored in the bay we counted 23 multihulls and 31 monohulls. And that number excludes the 30+ day charter cats operating out of the marina. Our boat refit that includes a conversion to all electric needs a lot of solar panels. We are fitting four Victron 175watt panels to the guardrails (2 per side). So we have designed and built custom support arms that attach to our carbon fibre guardrails allowing the panels to swivel. All made with low cost materials. Sir Ben Ainslie, has been robbed of his Rolex watch at knifepoint in Barcelona, ahead of qualification races for the America's Cup, Spanish media have reported.The most successful Olympic sailor of all time was threatened with a knife by a group who took his Rolex, worth €20,000 (£16,858), on Saturday night, newspaper La Vanguardia reported. The 47-year-old confirmed the theft in a statement. The four-time gold medallist is aiming to lead the British crew to a first-ever victory at the America's Cup. The robbery had taken place near a swimming club close to where the British team has based itself in the city, El Periodico reported. Sir Ben said in a statement given to BBC News, "Barcelona is a fantastic host city for the America’s Cup. The team has felt welcomed and is enjoying our stay in this vibrant city.
