A detailed tour of the Ship's Cockpit aka Wheelhouse. A brief introduction of all the equipments and their use. Merchant ships carry a specific number of Navigation and communication equipments. The requirement is as per the size and trading pattern of the Vessel. There are certain guidelines those are to be followed regarding carriage of navigation equipments. I am onboard a Capesize Bulk Carrier which is on Foreign going route. The equipments we have onboard the ship assisst us in Planning and monitoring of a safe voyage. Technology has evolved a lot, specially in the Maritime industry. I still remember during my innitial days at Sea, when i was a Deck cadet. We use Paper charts for Voyage planning. From a Tropical storm to the North Seas, we have used, and tested our two Fortress Anchors in a number of situations. The Fortress Anchor can be disassembled and makes a great backup anchor. We tested it in Holand's Waddenzee where it was so deeply buried we couldn't find it by digging! We also tested two Fortress anchors in a tropical storm, and again could barely get them up afterwards! At this point, we’re about halfway into our river journey from Lake Michigan to the Gulf of Mexico. We’ve transited several locks thus far, but no other part of the route has as many locks as Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway. It’s one lock right after another on the Tenn-Tom. Some are more memorable that others, making weird squeaks and screeches we’re not used to. We transit the tallest lock on our entire route, Jamie Whitten Lock (84’), where water spews from the sides of small doors in the lock wall, unnerving us both.
