Pippi på Fair Isle! **Det finns en ö som alla besökare hyllar undantagslöst! Fair Isle! **Stardust med besättning seglade förbi Fair Isle då vi seglade mot Orkney från Shettland sommaren 2024. Men nu sattsar vi på flera turer dit under sommar 2025. Skepparn har dock varit på ön tidigare och kan bara stämma in i lovsången om ön. Den gången var det ombord på en Ovni 43 i sällskap av kollegorna Martin Sande och en livs levande Kapten Krok alias Thomas. Jag fick möjligheten att ta tåget från Göteborg för att ansluta i Bergen, Norge där Thomas stod reda med motorerna på tomgång och vi lämnade direkt. Överseglingen den gången var händelselös och stilla, det var en del motorgång. Men när vi närmade oss Far Isle så hade dimman lagt sig ensligt klassisk Shettlandsmodell. Inloppet är smalt så alla händerna var på däck för att spana vägen mellan klipporna för att komma in. Efter allt jag hade hört om ön så tog jag en tur på ön direkt efter ankomst. Det blev en av de finaste ö upplevelserna jag haft. Det var där jag insåg vad folk talar om då de uttrycker sin passion för Puffins och anan sjöfågel. Det är speciellt att på så nära håll kunna följa så mycket fågel. Det är ju heller ingen nackdel att fåglarna ser ut som om de var uppsminkade som clowner och kutar runt på land likt dykare med grodfötter. Att skepparn och så många andra får Pippi på Fair Isle är en av orsakerna till att Stardust kommer segla tre turer till Shettland 2025. ——-

After reading so many sailing books from the past 120 years I am starting to recognize certain authors who I had never heard of before starting the Mariner's Library who were giants within the sailing community a life time ago. One of the most commonly referenced authors from the first half of the 20th century has to be Weston Martyr, and the book everyone compliments is 'The Southseaman'.  Just learning whatever I can about the man, his adventures and the nature of his bond with the sea plus a quick reading of the opening few pages told me enough for me to know that we would be in for a great tale, told by a master storyteller.  I for one, am excited to hear for the first time an old, but fresh-to-me story, that was so inspiring and enjoyable to my own, long-gone sailing heroes.
